Updated, 2007-09-01.

Welcome! This group is an effort to disseminate useful, generalizable knowledge about photography, and we'd like your help. The photos in our pool are only gateways to the topics we discuss. Before you post a topic or photo, please read the rules, which tells how to post and what we'd like to see. In particular, be on-topic (photographic technique, not computer software minutiae or one-time "how I did this" explanations) and don't duplicate topics (check the index, use the discussion search function).

Here are a couple of related groups, which you may find more useful for topics outside our purview:

There are dozens of Photoshop groups that discuss image manipulation. It would be best if Photoshop-specific issues were posted there. Post-processing topics are definitely welcome here, but please try to make it generic, and stress the concepts, not the specific actions.

Equipment -- For all your specific equipment discussion that isn't technique-related. (e.g. Which camera should I buy?)

From Ore To Gold -- Show how you turned photographical ore into gold using the techniques learned here.
cool :)

but i don't use photoshop - this way i have i have a different moon each time, and a lot more stars in the image than otherwise ... also you get some pin point with some trailing ...

i intend also to catch things like the orion nebula & jupiter in a scene when they return to my skies in the winter.

I know there are better ways of getting an astronomical image into a wide image, however i do think this way has a touch of class and is very much cheaper than a long lens ...

One winter night I shot the moon with my 300mm lens so now have a stock photo of it.

When I have a building that needs a bit of ... something in the sky I create a Photoshop layer then throw in the moon. I size it to fit.

The funny thing is that no one ever asks how I got the moon to appear in that part of the sky. LOL

doobiejazz posted a new topic:

ok so what i'm talking about here is nothing new really - it's a lens swap, but from a TELESCOPE :) this gives a much bigger moon - as illustrated above ... this technique can be useful in landscape photgraphy at night, sunrise and sunset, depending on the moon.

The technique is simple - set up your shot on a tripod with your normal lens and camera ... and remove it when you're happy.
You then attach your dslr or film camera to a small telescope using a t adapter for your brand of camera, get the moon to where you want it in the frame and in focus, then have the lens cap for the scope ready ..
Open shutter with a remote, putting the cap on the scope fairly swiftly
(timing depends on moon phase, but the quicker the better really unless it's a very thin crescent)
Then swap to your lens, replace on tripod & do long exposure as normal.
By the way, you may find this difficult if you don't have a manual lens with aperture rings - the camera resets the aperture when you connect the lens ...
you don't need a huge telescope ... most of my pics have been with a small "celestron travelscope" bought for £60 including tripod ....
this is also great for getting nice bright stars in your image, or even saturn if you have a huge telescope ... athough it IS tricky
Krizzzerz,

I had a go with a test image and the results can be seen on a old account of mine below, i managed to have a go at 2,3,4 but 1 is different techqiues so a bit more difficult. These are in no way perfect but a start, as i said i dont use ps for this kind of work so not my area of expertise, Check out the 4 shots of the paris-model.
