Photo book question

I know there are many sources for printing photobooks but I am trying to match one that was done for my nephew a few years ago. The book is about 5x7 and is spiral bound in a portrait format. Each page is printed double sided on a cardboard weight paper. There are about 8 double sided pages with a clear plastic or maybe heavy vellum cover.

Hey everyone!

This saturday, I will be doing a shoot for a family. We are going out to some land that has a really old barn and farm house on it and they are bringing their sons horses. I have a few ideas in my head but I was just wondering if anyone else had some that they could share. The boys are ages 4 and 7 and this shoot will mainly focus on them with maybe a family portrait in the mix also.

Thanks in advance!

Reply to Photography 101

DaShell posted a reply:

Just thought I would share. . .

5 questions to ask yourself b/f tripping the shutter

The following post, exploring questions to ask when taking a photo, is by San Francisco based photographer Jim M. Goldstein.

1. Is my SHUTTER SPEED correct to capture my subject properly? Do I want everything sharp, or do I want some blur to denote movement?
*2 things to look at-ISO and aperture
*lower ISO= less sensitive to light >slower shutter speed.
*aperture: higher # = smaller opening >slower shutter speed.

2. Is my selected FOCAL LENGTH or my POSITIONING optimal to capture my subject? How much/little do I want my subject to fill the frame? What angle is best?
*wider focal lengths (smaller mm# ex: 16mm)= wider field of view, also less magnification and some distortion around edges.
*Longer focal lengths (bigger mm# ex: 300mm)= narrow field of view and greatly magnify your subject.
*Don't forget your best focal accessory-----> YOUR FEET!

3. Have I chosen the proper DOF to best highlight my subject?
*identify what is most/least important to the photo and keep it in/out of focus. This is critical to keeping your viewers eye on the subject.
*pay attention to aperture---->small aperture (large#)= greater DOF. Larger aperture (smaller#)= shallower DOF.

4.Is my subject in FOCUS? No brainer, I know, but you'd be surprised how many times this is done poorly.
*Having a sharp subject enables the viewers eye to settle in on it b/f exploring the rest of the image.
*Make sure the eyes of the subject are in focus.

5. Have I checked the EDGES OF MY FRAME to minimize distracting elements?
*look for wires, branches, bright spots, poles, bright colors etc. in the background, reposition if necessary.

The next time you’re lining up your next shot remember Shutter Speed, Depth of Field, Focal Length / Positioning, Focus, Edges. It may seem like a lot, but with practice thinking through these things becomes second nature and your photography is sure to improve.

For anyone who is interested. Its free

Here is a quote from the site so you'll know what the class is about. . .

"Starting next week (Monday), I will be writing an ongoing weekly series of articles titled Photography 101 - A Basic Course on the Camera. In perhaps about a dozen parts, we’ll cover all the basics of camera design and use. We’ll talk about the ‘exposure triangle’: shutter speed, aperture and ISO. We’ll talk about focus, depth of field and sharpness, as well as how lenses work, what focal lengths mean and how they put light on the sensor. We’ll also look at the camera itself, how it works, what all the options mean and how they will affect your photos."

Just thought I would add this link for those of you who don't want to wait (impatient like me LOL. . . .)

Hi, I'm DaShell I'm in Texas (DFW for now)

I love ice cream!!

I'm a Canon girl, have been for many years, my first camera was an AE1 given to me by my grandmother when she upgraded, I went through 3 of them. Last July I went digital and bought a Reble xt. Wish I had waited just a couple more months, I could have gotten the xti for the same price, oh well. . . Photography has been something I have loved for about 10-12 years, just started getting serious about it last year.

I love my kids (3 of them) and my husband (when he isn't being anal LOL)
