London Independent Photography

The London Independent Photography (LIP) Flickr Group is here primarily to showcase members' work.

There is also a thread where you can add your work for discussion and review and is useful for those members that cannot reach satellite group meetings but might like to get some feedback from a broad group of members.

Please consider that pictures you post to this group will rotate to display on the home page of LIP website. As such, post only shots you consider tasteful enough to represent our membership appropriately. With this in mind, images with text for copyright, names or other writing on them may be deleted. Other deletions occur at times when you submit multiple images which are very similar, or for other 'curatorial' reasons.

Again please do not re-submit images which have been deleted from the group and remember that the best images to submit are representative examples of your best work! Thanks!

If you are not a member of London Independent Photography already then please check out the details of our community organisation here:

About
Welcome to the London Independent Photography 24th Annual Exhibition!
The LIP Annual Exhibition aims to provide a platform for members to exhibit their best work - to be viewed by each other and the general public. The growth of our membership in recent years means we always receive more prints in the selection process than hanging space allows.
We go to great lengths to ensure the entire process is completely anonymous, giving each and every member an equal chance to exhibit. Therefore, independent professionals who are connected to London’s photographic community, but not members of LIP, conduct the selection process. Having independent selectors is the fairest way to choose representative photography by our members, year after year.

    _____________________________________________________

We're thrilled to present a lecture and conversation with internationally acclaimed photographer Roger Ballen for the Janet Hall Memorial Lecture 2012.

Ballen will present his work and discuss his career in photography spanning nearly 50 years. Born in New York in 1950, he has since lived and worked in South Africa where he gained recognition photographing in documentary forms, later evolving into his now instantly-recognisable tableaus which incorporate humans, animals, drawings and sculptures. His minimalist black and white film work intends to interpret the world. He says, "My purpose in taking photographs over the past forty years has ultimately been about defining myself. It has been fundamentally a psychological and existential journey."

His images are raw and formal with every detail of importance. They are often created in places Ballen claims would give other people nightmares. He is currently working on his ninth monograph, photographing birds "in a strange, surreal and complex world".

Recently he directed the music video "I FINK YOU FREEKY' for the group Die Antwoord, which has had nearly five million views on YouTube in just 6 weeks of release. He will be in the UK to launch Shadow Land, a major exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery, opening 30th March. Ballen was also interviewed for our magazine fLIP, featured in the FANTASY theme issue of Summer 2011.

We will shortly announce a guest host who will lead an interview with Roger on the evening.

About the Janet Hall Memorial Lecture: London Independent Photography organises an annual lecture with a renowned photographer working on independent projects. The lecture takes place each year in memory of co-founder member Janet Hall who passed away in 2005. She was our energetic, original program organiser and a driving force in establishing London Independent Photography in 1987. The sale of her photographic equipment, bestowed to the group, made the original Janet Hall lecture possible. Previous speakers have included Martin Parr, Brian Griffin and Simon Norfolk.

Nearest tube: Charing Cross

London Independent Photography’s 23rd Annual Exhibition is the highlight of the organisation’s calendar. It is a must-see event for anyone interested and involved with photography in London. The exhibition runs from the 18th – 29th October at The Strand Gallery, which is located in the heart of the West End.

This year there were a record number of submissions from LIP members. The work was independently selected by Bridget Coaker (picture editor at Guardian Newspaper Group & Director of Troika Editions) and Mick Williamson (head of Photography at London Metropolitan University).

The impartial selection process is key to the exhibition’s success, as every LIP member has an equal chance of selection. This year over 130 photographs will be on display and they showcase the diversity and extraordinary breadth of talent within the LIP membership.

THE STRAND GALLERY is just moments from Trafalgar Square and is one of Europe’s most popular private photographic galleries with previous exhibitions such as Let it Bleed: The Rolling Stones 1969 U.S. Tour by Ethan Russell, Eltonography by Terry O’Neill, The Libertines by Roger Sargent and Bob Dylan by Jerry Schatzberg.
