Arm's Length Self Portrait Experience

EDIT: Group name changed to better reflect the rules. 1-12-07

At arm's length: Pictures taken of yourself by yourself. No tripod, no reflective surfaces. Without a tripod, self portraits can be tricky. It's often hard to re-create the exact image, so when you get a good one, it's often unique and ephemeral. We can also explore the proverbial "buddy" shots, i.e. where you hold a camera at arm's length to get everyone in. I think the amateurish nature of this type of photo is particularly interesting.

Please make sure the photos you are adding to the pool are meeting the group guidelines.

1. Of you, by you.
2. Taken at arm's length (you holding the camera)
3. No mirror shots or other reflective surfaces
4. No shots of just your shadow
5. No timer shots, you hold the camera

As a quick rule, if I can see your camera or both your hands, it doesn't belong here.

Thanks so much for your cooperation and participation!

Although all the photos taken are beautiful and unique, pictures taken in reflective surfaces or that are obviously portraits of other people other than yourself will be removed.

Spanish:

1. De ti, por ti.
2. Tomadas únicamente sosteniendo la cámara.
3. No tu reflejo.
4. No tu sombra.

Gracias.

I like what sunshinesketches said - and it's partly my reality as well.
but, I also do it out of being bored, or wanting to explore new ideas and techniques or gear. sometimes I just want to see what a particular combination of things will do before I go out into "the field" with it.

plus its, fun.. I don't have to tell someone else to "hold still", "look this way" or "do this :)"

The person you see in a mirror is not the same person everyone else sees.

The person in a self-portrait isn't either. In a self-portrait you just might be able to remove the wall between you and others. At least a few bricks anyway.

Some don't love or even like who they see in the mirror.

Maybe, we are sometimes looking for something worth learning to love.

Most people don't like photos of themselves. I think we can call that a given. Apparently it has to do with how we see ourselves, our own looks, our own image.
A photograph shows us the face others see. We, however are used to seeing ourselves as a mirror image on a daily basis. Most people, besides actors and models, really very seldom see themselves in photos.

My reason for doing this: The same reason we climb mountains....

Whenever we have any family event, I am the photographer, not the photographee (is that even a word???). Sooo... there are no photos of me. If I want photos of myself, I have to take them myself. My husband is great at a lot of things, but a lousy photographer! :)

There are now over 100 people from 25 countries interested in this installation.

It is now open again and because this particular group is the one that most fits the brief please send me your self portraits if you wish to be part of the Art Installation in the UK. Thanks!

Thank you all for your self portrait images, the response and images have been fantastic. So the gathering stage has now ended.

There are now just over 100 hundred participants from 22 different countries, which is marvelous.

I have been able to download images where people have sizes on the image on their flickr page, and some people I have mailed for them to send me their photograph via e-mail.

I am going to send mails to people I cannot download, which is about half of all people. One person has said if I am made a contact then I will be able to download from flickr but that appears to only work sometimes. There may be an obvious answer to this but as I am still relatively new to flickr I dont know what or if there is!

It may be a slow process but I will get around to everyone. At the moment I am STILL writing my dissertation.

Thank you once again, and I will keep you up to date with any news.

Best wishes to you, Maggie
