Dachshunds & Food Allergies ?

barb8310 posted a new topic:

Hello,
My boyfriend & I have a 2 year old chocolate & tan mini doxie named Max. Approximately about 6 months ago, we noticed that he started to develop some skin issues. He would be itching, biting, scratching, & licking at his paws . We have taken him to different vets for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd opinions and they just kept medicating him with antibiotics and put him on allergy medicine. At one point, he was on Antibiotics for approx 1 month straight. We were assuming that his little body can only take so much medicine before it can harm him. We decided to go to a Vetranary specialist ( animal dermatologist) and they wanted to see if he might be allergic to a certain food before they see if he has enviornmental allergies . He was put on a hypoallergenic diet, but he hasn't been that food. We were told that he can't eat any other food besides that one that was recommended by the vet . He would go for about 2-3 days without eating anything. He would just beg for human food.

About 3 weeks ago, he unfortunatly came down with HGE ( Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis) and we was hospitalized for 4 days. Luckily he recovered from that just fine on his 2nd birthday and his appetite came back. About a few days ago, we noticed that he started to have white patches on his chest & belly area, and we are not sure where that is coming from. He still wasn't eating the recommended food, so we decided to feed him his Purina one food and he ate all of it. Has anyone had a similar experience or have any suggestions? It would really help us out.

Thank you

I am SO thankful I found this site. I almost put my dachshund (Maggie) down. She was a rescue, so I can only guess she is between 12 & 13 yrs old. She had a large cyst on her front toe which we finally decided had grown large enough to have removed. Vet said it would be simple, but called us the day after surgery and said she was not walking. She kept her another night and called again with the same news. She immediately referred us to a surgeon and suggested if we decided to go that route we needed to do it now. Because of the dogs age, we decided to just get her home and then decide. I cried for two days solid thinking the only other thing to do was put her to sleep. After reading these posts, I decided to keep her rested, give the muscle relaxers and pain meds the vet gave us, and keep her crated. After a few days, I started cutting back on the meds to see how she did with less. She is now walking around although she wobbles (hind quarters only) and seems to be improving daily. The vet talked about how she expressed (I believe was the term) her bladder while at the vet and that we would have to do the same. As SOON as Maggie got home, she went out and pee'd. I too was worried about the bowel movement and I believe it was the 3rd day without one when I read about giving her canned pumpkin. I don't know if it was just timing, but within two hours she had a BM. I don't know what happened in surgery, but I did not care for some of the things the vet was saying, so I won't be returning there. I agree that a second opinion or just another view would have helped. As of today, Maggie seems to continue to gain strength. It has become harder to watch her now that she wants to run and climb again, but I will watch her and still keep her mostly rested, since it has only been two weeks. She does not appear to be in pain and I would not let her suffer if I thought so in the least. Thanks again everyone. You helped save my Maggie's life!

Harry seems to be doing as good as he can for now. These days are tough but he is worth every moment. Looks like his bowel and bladder are functioning as they should right now. I make sure he gets out three times a day. People must think I am crazy when they see me praising him for going outside. I would recommend to anyone with a dog that is recouperating from an injury or surgery you get a dog baby carriage. It allows them to be taken out without breaking your back. I also have his crate on a rolling cart so he can be where ever I am. Dachshunds are people dogs and as long as they can be with you they are more content. He has excerises I do three times a day and I make sure they are done. Love is a powerful thing and there is nothing I would not do for him. Prayers help.......

Harry saw his neurologist and surgeon yesterday. He is 8 days post-op. Right now the Dr says he is recovering well and making positive progress. Baby steps forward. I want to encourage anyone that sees their dogs become paralyzed get them to the vet Immediately. The sooner you can get them there the better chance the dog has for recovery.

My youngest son Harry, mini long hair dachshund, is 6 1/2 years old. He is a loving boy who has just under gone back surgery. He blew a disc between L1&2. These articles have been so encouraging I think I will read them when I am down. He is paralyzed at this time but his neurosurgeon feels he has a good chance to recover. The recovery period is at least 4-6 weeks. I will keep you posted. Monday he goes in for his first recheck. Prayers help...........

Buddy has also had back problems and he couldn´t even walk with pain. His vet reccomended acupuncture and you can´t imagine the difference some sessions have made. He doesn´t have pain anymore and jump and run as if he was a young dog.( He is 9 years old.)
Now he has a session per month only as prevention.
