I think flickr, in general, is on a downward slide. None of the groups I participated in only a couple of years ago are active.

I can see where there is a need to discuss this topic; however, I do think that there is a happy median somewhere between the definition given by the first poster and from Stewbphoto. Here is my first example that I wanted to add to this group:

From my title you can infer that he is a preacher; however, he is not located inside his church, as Pablo might suggest is more desirable. But, I would argue that this absolutely an environmental portrait. The preacher in this photograph was sitting on his front porch but, I found him and photographed him when he was practicing the sermon he would later give in his church that morning. Like Stewbphoto suggests, I do think the portrait (which was actively requested and not just a candid street photograph) provides some insight into "...an enviro. portrait needs to have a context of the persons life that gives some kind of insight as to whom they are or what they do..."

Your composition is wonderful and backgrounds informative without being intrusive. And you pulled some great, friendly smiles out of your subjects.

Some, like the one with the mixer, makes me imagine that it's their favorite thing in the kitchen.

Great stuff, Michael.

Here's a set of kitchen portraits I shot for a cookbook. It was quite a challenge for all the reasons you mentioned, in addition to finding enough old ladies that would let me take their photo in their kitchen. (I shot over 40 women but only posted what I thought were the best ones.) Hope you like em. Let me know what you think.

stewbphoto posted a reply:

It seems to me that there are still a lot of portraits being added not environmental portraits... i.e. images that have a very shallow depth of field and images that are cropped very tightly.... I don't see the usefulness of having an Environmental Portrait Group if you are just going to keep approving regular portraits. Some of the portraits I have seen are pretty good but there are plenty of other groups that host these types of images....

yes!!!!

No!!!!!
Also from a photojournalist stand point if there was no info (caption info) about the person who they are or what they do (for how long) then its just a snapshot to me. I always take environmental portraits and I take it as an opportunity to actually meet someone new and talk with them...

I understand that you can only post one photograph per week. I posted last week and went to post today and it let me go through the process of choosing a photographs, but every picture I clicked on in my group of photographs it gave me a '!' symbol and stated that I couldn't place the photo in the environmental portraits group. My main focus as a photographer is Environmental Portraits, and I'm just curious as to why I cant submit anything. I only have 1 photograph in the pool so far.
