Are the Apuan Alps going to disappear?

This mountain range in northern Tuscany, known as “the Carrara marble mountains”, is at present in serious danger of being completely dug out and sold by the pound at the globalized calcium carbonate market.
Marble is almost pure CaCO3, which is employed in a wide range of industrial processes such as the production of paints, paper, plastics, glass, electri
c wires, building materials, purifier filters for air and water, toothpaste and, of course, in agriculture and in the food industry.
Those of you who think marble quarries produce just blocks to be turned into sculptures have only a partial knowledge of what really is going on up there: blocks are less than 1/3 on the total volume of excavated material. The big business is now gravel (“scaglie”), and the finer the better. So they just mine the hillslope and load the gravel onto lorries. Blow & Carry. Rough work, no specialized craftmanship required, less induct and employment among the local comunity as the rough material is shipped all over the world. But it's cheap and fast. And indeed, it goes incredibly fast!
Last year they managed to produce over 5 millions tons marble, a volume equal to that of a 36 km long queue of tourist busses. Or, if you prefer, one single block with a square base with side 330 ft and a height of 472.
The impact on environment is devastating: mountains and crests are just topped off, water wells are polluted or simply dry up, the ecological system on its whole is menaced, the more as this is a karst area. Over 5000 lorries a day driving back & forth through the city of Carrara among clouds of white dust.

ALL OF THIS is the biggest environmental disaster in Europe and MUST BE STOPPED, the Apuan Alps (“Regional Parc” and UNESCO Geosite) must be preserved.... it might be not too late yet!

MAB & World Heritage Sites

Hi there,

I have been an UNESCO MAB member for some time. When I browsed through the group, I noticed that many pictures were posted that didn't seem to be Man and Biosphere Reserves. I realized that I too had posted "the wrong" pictures here. It turned out that they are World Heritage Sites.

I'm interested to learn more about the UNESCO protected areas networks, and I promise to post the right images in the right group from now on ;)

ECONNECT launches a photo competition on ecological connectivity. The contest ends next Jan. 15th.

Among the prizes, there are two weekend-trips for two at the Alpi Maritime National Park (Italy) and the Park of Berchtesgaden (Germany). The chairman of the jury is Denis Curti, head of the prestigious photo agency Contrasto Italy.

They met many people dedicated to protecting Crete’s heritage -- botanists, geologists, historians, mountaineers, musicians, community-based tourism directors, ecolodge owners, herbalists, organic farmers, artisan food producers and chefs.
