Crows

A group primarily for images of crows, those intelligent, social, somewhat mysterious, always interesting birds that share our cities. Ravens too...

Other corvidae - magpies, jays, etc. - welcome also, as are reasonably corvid-like birds, such as grackles.

Compared to a Common Raven (Corvus corax) which was much larger

On the difficulty of exposing for black birds like crows and ravens - centre weighted or spot metering will usually get the bird but blow out light tones in the background. The bird is more important then just try and reduce the background over exposure in curves or the shadows/hightlights slider. It will always be a compromise.

One thing to consider is that size and shape is variable among species. Some crows in India have really big beaks. Location is a big indicator because your North American ravens looks somewhat different than those in Europe...plus Europe has those confusing rooks and jackdaws. That said, it looks like a crow to me. Its beak is not that big (yes, it's big, but it's not a honker), and the tail looks square rather than V shaped.

I don't think it's a Raven.. I have been to Wollaton park & remember there were a fair amount of Rooks there..

However, as says - it's mostly a question of size.

I've been up close to various corvids & ravens are very big, especially when one is within 10 or 20 feet.

Raven (Abisko national park, northern Sweden, Arctic):

Crows (Thornbury, near Bristol, UK):

Looking at the proportions of this bird, ( the lenght of it's legs, and size of it's bill ) compared to it's body, and picking up on size clues ( the leaves on the ground ), I would have to say that this is a Carrion Crow, Corvus Corone.
