Tomosy's first book covers the FTb. The first half of the book is full of general repair info, the last half details individual cameras. Book two covers the F-1. Both are well worth the money.

it's almost the same as removing the top of the Canon FT, The FTbn, would have a wire for the flash.

I had opened the top of the Canon FT and FTB and it's very easy unlike an AE1-P, which have confusing spaghetti wiring all over? Since I had my FT and FTb"S lubricated a couple of years ago I'd just air-blow dust with a nebulizer they used for asthma to keep it clean. Easy to take off the viewfinder to clean. If you take out the prism to clean the screen, be careful? If you don't have the heart to open the top, it's safer that way as you could end up with a broken cam. I'm also unsure where to oil from the top, as I need more diagrams, maybe pics or videos on where to oil?

It's easier oiling and cleaning from the bottom and I read from another site that he'd remove the tripod plate and also put oil on the side, lens side, mechanism of the cam that triggers the lens. He wondered why that part was not included in lubrication. It made wonders when I oiled mine too.

I think, if the camera had been used more, they are smoother to work with compared to a mint kept on a shelf which are quite stiff and tight............

Taking off the top plate of the FTb isn't all that hard. Unscrew the rewind crank, remove the shutter speed dial (unscrew the pin face), remove the film advance (again, unscrew the pin face), remove the battery cover, remove the fours screws around the outside of the top plate. That's it.

This is from the Thomas Tomosy camera repair book on what to lubricate on an FTb:

"When oilng the shutter, the curtain shafts and the timing gears are the ones needing oil must desperately. The FTb has a extra master shaft running from top to bottom. Oil these three shafts in their brass bushings. both top and bottom (six bushings). One of the bushings at the bottom is under the advance pinion gear. You can't see it, but it can be reached with a syringe without pulling the gear. You must guess it's position (he shows a photo). Use a minimum amount of oil."

When your FTb's shutter makes a clank sound instead of a click, check the rubber pad opposite of the tripod screw mount at the left side with the camera bottom facing you, it could be worn out. The small rubber pad absorbs the vibration, sound, the shutter would make. Sometimes they are unglued and gets in the sprockets at the bottom, jamming the shutter? Easy replacement would be a better rubber pad.

I used watch oil on the Canon ft and Ftb and I always seem to re-oil at the bottom. I think they need more oil for their mechanical parts. Yes, the shutter would crank more sweetly.

pentaxpete, thanks for reminding.................................
