Libraries and Librarians - Please tag the images you add!

Welcome to the premiere Library and Librarian photo group on the internet!
May it give you the same joy you experience when uncovering a great literary treasure hidden in the stacks.

Basic Group Info:
Libraries and Librarians is a friendly and informative community with members from all around the globe. All are welcome and you don't have to be a librarian to join in (there are a lot of us here though!). Thank You and Welcome!

Group Tagging Guidelines
Please Tag The Photos You Add To This Group!
To make the photos in this community a more valuable, precisely searchable resource we have carefully established some consistent guidelines for you to use when adding tags. Please help the project by tagging the photos you have added to the group using the guidelines suggested below. If you do not add concise tags to the photos you add to this group you may find that someone else does.

All photos in this pool will get these two tags:
libs&libs
librariesandlibrarians

Conditional Subject Tags:
library
librarian
librarians
conference
books
stacks
serials
programs
readers
architecture
interior
exterior
signs

Conditional Type Tags:
If the photo is of a library, a tag should be added for the type of library it is.
public
academic
special
national
law
state
etc, etc...

Conditional Location Tags:
Adding country, state, county, province or other relevant location data is also always requested.

Other Conditional Tags:
If another word is a useful and accurate image descriptor feel free to use it. Please do use the above tags as guidelines whenever possible.

Optional location tags: Geotagging
Along those lines, we will also be geotagging many of the images in the group. Geotagging is an interesting project by Geobloggers.com
which uses Google Maps to retrieve Flickr photos specifically tagged (geotagged). It will allow us to create a global map that has highlights corresponding to the location of the image captured in the geotagged image. You then click on the highlight on the map and are instantly transported to the image captured in that location. Or you can navigate Google Maps to zoom in to the satellite image or the street map. It is very impressive! Since this is such an amazingly geographically diverse group, this is an especially exciting aspect of the group tagging project. This concept is evolving rapidly and will continue do so in the near future. For now, adding appropriate geotags to images will position them to take advantage of whatever evolution of the technology we decide to ultimately use.

==========================================
How to geotag your Flickr photos

À la Google Maps
1. Upload your photos to Flickr as you normally do.
2. Log into maps.yuan.cc
3. 'Click on Autenticate on Flickr'
4. Click on SEARCH and fill in the fields to retrieve your photos (you may uncheck 'photos on flickr map'. You'll be presented with a list of your latest photos.
5. Select the picture you want to geotag so you see it at the bottom of the page
6. Now go to the map on the left and search for the location. Zoom in to the desired depth. Double clic on the right place on the map
7. Click on 'save location'

The tags will automagically be written back to Flickr and a link will
be added to the description.
You can change the text for the link.

That sounds like a lot of steps, but you'll be tagging and placing
photos in no time at all:

NEW! and easier: with Flickr Organizer

============================================

THANK YOU!
Thanks so much to everyone in this community for adding your photos, tagging them and helping this group become such an amazing resource. Everyday I am inspired by this group of world-wide libraries, library fans and librarians. We have some interesting ideas for ways to use the resources here to benefit libraries and it is very exciting to be a part of it all!

I see you've already uploaded some 14,000 of your 30,000 collection, but you should check out Flickr's "The Commons" project:

"The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world's public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer."

www.flickr.com/commons

Lots of libraries and institutions are already taking part, including the Library of Congress who helped pilot it.

The Library of Congress has, but I think that might be a different league...

Try:

Barrington Area Library Local History
www.flickr.com/photos/barringtonhistory/

Swindon Collection, Central Library
www.flickr.com/photos/swindonlocal/

Providence Public Library
www.flickr.com/photos/ppl_ri_images/

Back to LC - they are actually soliciting indentifying comments for photos they don't have much information about. Could be something for you to consider as you set this up.

Good luck!

The Iredell County Public Library in Statesville, N.C. has a large photograph collection that we are currently in the process of scanning for preservation purposes while placing the photos and negatives in archival grade envelopes and sleeves. We would like to begin placing these online through Flickr. We have purchased a Flickr Pro account and would like to know if any other libraries have experience in placing such a large collection online.

techsoupglobal posted a new topic:

We’d like to invite you or your organization to participate in our 2012 TechSoup Digital Storytelling Challenge. We’re in the midst of an exciting challenge with learning opportunities and a chance to submit your one-minute video or five-photo slideshow to win excellent award donations from our partners.

This challenge is open to all social benefit organizations regardless of 501(c)(3) status or location (yes, libraries too), and your finished product is yours to keep and use.

We know your organization values strategic storytelling as a means to project your mission - please consider submitting your own unique story to our storytelling challenge.

How to get involved this year

•	Submit a one-minute video or five-photo slideshow to win prizes! (Deadline: February 29 at 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time.)
•	Encourage everyone you know to participate! Spread the word: www.tsdigs.org
•	Subscribe to our Google group to stay up to date on all of these exciting happenings

Maybe you think you don’t have time to make a one-minute video? Think again!

Remember that video and photograph are the content people are spending the most time with online these days, and digital stories are a powerful way to share the passion and hard work your organization has for its mission!

What’s your organization’s story? Share it now!
