Cheap-Ass Camera

Cheap ass camera - alsmost a slur for the bargin picture taking machine that may or may not malfunction when you want it to. It can be the crappy yet enduring piece of kit we have found at some garage sale, thrift store, pawn shop, camera show or family member, neighbor or other friend that has passed your way because they heard you're a shutter bug that for some reason, allbeit unknown, produces wonderful images when we connect our eye to the finder.

It is easy to lust for the fanciful light boxes with robust build, legendary lenses, pro features and the like. I too lust for Leica, Hassy, Alpa and Rollei however they are not cheap ass cameras. You cannot find them at garage sales and if you someone has, well all the best. They are wondeful pieces of expensive equipment that we cheat ourselves into believing at some point or another are the key to wondeful images. The best images for me seem to come equipment that has little potential for resale other than to another cheap-ass camera freak.

Cheap ass cameras are not necessarily low fi but cheap. They could be Minolta, Agfa, Voigtlander, any other brand. All that is required is a purchase cost limit $50 (local currency or in the case of the UK GPB30). Tell your friends.

I make friends w/ thrift store workers, offering them spiffs for cameras that look good. If they see something like a Canon AE come in, they just call me and I'll bike the 2 blocks to the store. I got 3 very good Pentax K1000's w/ 50mm lenses for .99 each and spiffed the worker $10. I still frequent the bigger thrift stores often. Like Andre and Nothing say, it's all in the timing.

Garage sales & thrift stores. I've had good luck on craigslist, too. Revue 400L rangefinder for $10, Ricoh XR-7 body for $10 too (found a good macro/zoom lens at a camera shop for $50).

Lots of cheap film at rummage/garage/thrift stores too.

But mostly, it's just luck and timing, getting there before the next cheap camera junkie.

Keep cruising those thrift stores. $1.00 cameras are ubiquitous of course, but real jewels can be found at "almost free" prices. I found an unused new-in-box Holga for $5.00, an absolutely perfect Minolta X700 (with bag and three lenses) for $20.00. Best of all, a built-like-a-brick-shithouse Chinon screw-mount CX II (with lenses, filters, bag, etc., for $12.00.

While it is not 88 years old, it's still pretty old but in very good shape. So I'm putting it in the tabako denda-en humidor downstairs so I can sell it for 1.3M someday.

Camera Clubs, Photo workshops, Photo Adult Education Classes, get around other photographers and let it be know that you're always interested in old cameras, or film, or old photography equipment.
I was once turned onto 2 cases of kodak gold 200 / 400 film which I ended up getting for about 08¢ a roll through a contact who worked at a Walgreen where they were throwing the stuff away. She was purely digital so she turned me onto it cause she knows I'm always looking for film and film cameras.

To revive this thread, my cheap ass camera of November 2009 is a Canon FTb along with FD 50 f1.8 and 135 f3.5 lenses for the bargain price of FREE. I think I might have invested in $2 worth of foam to re-seal the camera. Bonus, the shutter speeds are pretty much bang on.
