Canon DSLR User Group

Discussion of Canon Digital SLR equipment and issues common to Canon digital capture, post processing and technique. Feel free to post news, topics, and links of interest to Canon DSLR users. This group is open to all.

The group pool is for sample pictures taken with Canon DSLR’s, as such they should include EXIF data so that members can look at lens, body combinations.

The pool has over 1,000,000 images. Please limit your uploads to no more than 1 per day in order to give everyone equal exposure and to maintain a diverse pool.

Discussion Board Rules

The aim of our discussion board is to help our members by answering their questions about Canon brand DSLRs or related photography topics. Any question about any model Canon DSLR or accessory, questions or comments about tripods, lighting, or posts about photographers doing interesting things are all within the bounds of our discussions. We want beginner and experienced alike to be comfortable asking any question without fear of verbal abuse.

All questions and discussion on any appropriate topic, from any member will be treated with respect. If a member with a Canon 1Ds MK III doesn't know how to turn his camera on and needs help, we'll gladly supply it. If a professional portrait photographer doesn't know how to set a control on her camera, we'll gladly help her out.

Use [OT] for off topic posts that will be useful to the group. (OT Threads may have a short life, don't be upset when they are deleted).

Carefully title your posts so that they can be scanned easily from the list view of topics.

Use a spelling checker and re-read your posts. If you post and find a problem or someone points out a problem in your post, go back and edit it. Old posts have a way of being resurrected. Treat every post like it will be indexed by Google and listed in searches from outside of flickr (because it will).

English is not everyone's first language, give non-English speakers a break. However, everyone needs to be careful writing posts. If you need help with spelling, consult a dictionary. If someone replies to your post that they find it difficult to understand your question, consider editing your post for clarity.

Please use the search function before starting a new discussion topic. If you find a thread that covers your topic but is old, post your question at the end of it and that will pull it to the top of the discussion list.

Include sample images or links to images when asking for help to solve a problem.

This is not a critique group. Please do not post images or links to images in discussion threads asking for opinions on your work, those images belong in the group pool. Similarly do not start threads advertising your web site or blog unless it is Canon specific, all others will be deleted.

Post links to Canon related new groups to the New Group Announcements Thread. Off topic new group threads will be deleted.

If you post spam the thread will be deleted and you will be banned from the group.

Wanted to Buy or For Sale threads will be deleted.

Camera brand debates are no longer permitted.

Do not post inflammatory, off-topic or otherwise inappropriate messages.

If you don't have anything positive or constructive to add to a thread avoid it.

Any person using the discussion board to attack or insult other members will be banned from the group without warning. We will not tolerate bullies.

It doesn't matter if you're right and another person is wrong about a technical detail, you're wrong if you don't handle the discussion with civility.

This group is for everyone, beginner and professional, and everyone in it deserves to be treated with respect. If you can't do that avoid posting in our discussions.

Through teamwork the membership has adopted this standard for identifying and tagging Canon lenses. Although the group rules do not require you to tag the photos added to the pool, we encourage you to contribute to, and make use of this excellent resource.

Additional Guidelines on Gallery Threads:

1. If starting a gallery thread use the specific lens name as mentioned in the group's front page (e.g. Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, etc.) as the suffix and prefix with "Gallery: "

2. No more than one lens gallery can be started per day with probably no more than two per week, if more than 2 is started in a week the spillage that will be locked and unlocked the following week and will count towards the week the gallery is unlocked

3. We dont really encourage galleries not specific to canon dslrs and lenses so if you start one and it disappears dont be too disappointed :)

4. Nobody likes attention whores, dont flood the gallery with many consecutive posts,

Of course nobody can really enforce such a subjective rule efficiently nor would we waste time with such but do note the way you post reflects on you

5. Work safe image please, if you have a non work safe image you just absolutely have to show as a great example of results using the lens then just post the url to the image in the post

6. Maximum size of medium or 500 pixels on one side, the image should always be clickable linking back to the original image even if the image is private, large images maybe edited or removed

7. Non-image comments in gallery threads will be removed over time.

Also, please observe all Flickr Guidelines

I love to see your bird shots with your 400mm L lens, if only to see how my bird shots match with yours. Most of my bird shots are taken with the 70-200mm L or the 100-400mm L 'dust pump'... :)
I think 'loose' means not tight?

After seeing the demo I'm tempted to take my 100-400mm L lens apart if dust is visible on my photos. But after two years, no dust issues yet.

I attribute that 'dust free' condition to keeping that lens on a dedicated camer and always cover it after use with its lens sleeve that came with it...

Paul Braham Photography posted a reply:

In the last two years I've gone to Sri Lanka (twice), Teneriffe in the Canary Islands, and Egypt. Each time I've taken either a 5D or 7D - both last time to Sri lanka because I was also doing a job as a favour for a friend - plus a 70-200L or 200 prime, 24-105, sometimes a 100 macro and either a10-22 or 17-40. And of course odds and ends, including a mini-tripod once or twice. This kit is not hugely heavy and has been packed into a Billingham bag which still has room for plenty of in-flight necessities, or now a National Geographic satchel with the lenses and body in neoprene pouches and including a netbook. Everything else goes in the hold luggage with weight and room to spare. You're coming from the US so you won't be suffering the joys of Ryanair or Easyjet. Stop worrying and bring what you need, you'll regret it if you don't . Certainly bring a good WA zoom. I find the 17-40L works very well on a 5D (I use one for property photos for a realty research company) and is relatively inexpensive.

And I haven't been robbed/scammed or other wise assaulted (touch wood) on any trip since I started travelling. You obviously have to take a bit of care, especially in crowded places, but that is what decent travel insurance is for. Frankly, you are just as likely to be mugged in downtown Talahasee, possibly more so, and at least you are unlikely to be caught in the middle of a shoot-out. Listening to the news coverage in the UK people expect to be shot-at the moment they leave the airport in America! :-)

Reply to Cokin Z Pro Filters

tris1972 posted a reply:

I have the Cokin Z-Pro ND Grad set (100x150mm - 4" x 6" in old money.)

They are ok, the grads have a colour cast to them, my ND2 seems to have a magentaish cast, the ND4 seems pretty much neutral and the ND8 has a bluish colour cast...

The holder is pretty good, It has a slot on the rear for the lens mount and 3 slots on the front for filters. Its reconfigurable, so if you want/need to you can change all of these around (I have it back to front at the moment, so the lens mount slot is against what should be the front face of the holder, and I have 2 slots on the back (now front) because this way around seals better with my 10 stop filter, and also does not enter into the field of view on my 10-22 lens at its widest setting.)

I also have the Hitech 0.9 (ND8) reverse nd grad and Hitech prostop 10 IRND (ND1000) filter, both of which fit into the holder well.

The Hitech Reverse nd grad has a warm colour cast, does not create a problem as its used for sunsets/sunrises when the brightest part of the scene is the horizon. The Prostop 10 has a cool cast, but if overexposed or shot towards the sun creates a magenta cast that is hard to get rid of in PP.

The other thing I have noticed with the Prostop 10 is at wide angles (10mm on a 1.6 crop) if the scene is quite bright, it can cause reflections of the lens front to show up in the image.
