Maryland & Surround State Falconers Please Read

Brandon 3ddy posted a new topic:

Hey everyone,

My name is Brandon Eddy, I'm originally from the northeast mountains of Georgia. I'm now living in Baltimore where I'm currently a student studying photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art. I'm taking a photojournalism class this semester and I've always had a fascination with raptors. So for my final this semester I'm trying to document what it means to be a falconer. I'm hoping to portray both the joys of hunting with these creatures, as well as the type of individual it takes to be disciplined enough to keep such a bird. So here I am hoping to find some people that would be interested in allowing me to photograph them and their bird both at home and out hunting. I will be offering all digital files to the individual from the shoots as well as 8x10 prints of any images used from the shoot in the final. So if you're interested please send me an email with your name, county your hunting in, and type of raptor to beddy@mica.edu.

Back side of bc good hunting area. Harder to find in the summer unless they are local and dont migrate. Its a time consumption, you just have to get to know the areas. Good luck.

I'm from New York City and love raptors, in particular, red-tailed hawks. I photography most of them at the New York Botanical Garden which is 250 acres. 50 acres is an un-cut native forest. That is where I shoot many of my hawk photos. I really love the photos of this group. You all seem to enjoy the raptors as much as I do.

Welcome Jurgen. You may wish to join the "Bird Identification Help Group" here on Flickr. They are very helpful with quick identification of birds we don't recognize.

Looking at your pictures I would say that you need a longer lens. Most of the shots are reporting less than 170mm and looked cropped.
You really need a 300mm minimum or get closer but that would mean panning faster. A longer zoom and slower panning by being further back would make a big difference. Also shooting wide open at f2.8 is going to soften the image and not worth the trade off for shutter speed. Try at least f4 and the shutter speed can come down if needed. Good panning technique is more important than a fast shutter.

I am very keen to improve my skills at taking BIF shots and have being getting some sucess with a 5D but often dissapointed at end results with out of focus a very common problem. I am told it is very slow with focussing moving objects and that a 1D mklll is a far better camera. With the new mkiv on the market prices are coming down so is the mklll a sports/nature camera? Would appreciate your comments.

All the best
