Walrus: Odobenus rosmarus

Celebration and understanding of the Walrus, another mammal effected by Global Warming

Very few of us have experienced Walrusssss first hand so the photo pool will not be spilling over with walrus images. But they are fascinating creatures and like polar bears will be severely effected by the retreat of ice. By forming a group honoring them maybe we can all learn more.

If you live near an aquarium with walrus, maybe you could take an extra trip to photograph them and find out as much as possible about their personality. If you have seen them in the wild this is a place to gather those photos. And it would be a good place to gather links to articles and tidbits of knowledge.

Please invite people to join and add their Walrus images... you can copy this sticker if you wish

where have I been??? First time I am seeing this in the walrus group - I'll have to go image hunting........

ok, I found some........
I'm saying the walrus was "playing" with the keeper but it is hard to tell from still photos. There are other shots of Brutus as he would roll into the pool, climb out, get his treat, and roll into the pool again. I should have taken a video.............

Well, I saw a trailer for the Arctic Tale movie on youtube... The footage looks beautiful, but I'm not a big fan of the narration lighthearted attitude I heard in the clip.

I was hoping this movie would have the serious and sweeping grandeur of March of the Penguins. Oh, well... I hope it gets kids interested in walruses and the arctic.

Thanks me too! What is it about nature films needing to be all about "tooth and claw" and very little about social interactions and other things that make walrus life quite leisurely and pleasant? Apparently it isn't nearly as hard to be a walrus as it is to be a part of the American workforce ;)

Sometime later this year (maybe July or August) a documentary called "Arctic Tale" will be coming out. It follows the lives of a Polar Bear and, yes, a Walrus! And the animals in question are females, with babies!

I hope there is lots of beautiful footage of walruses in the wild, and not the usual horror show of the animals being attacked and eaten...

Hello!

You guys and gals probably have heard of Smooshi the walrus in Canada who is in love with her trainer, Phil. There's youtube videos out there of how she follows him around and is jealous of anyone coming near him.

Well, on Phil's myspace page, it sounds like he's having problems with Marineland, that they don't like his efforts to educate.

Anyway, sorry to be a downer, but if you have been touched by this inter-species love story, or want more information, check out his myspace page. Or do a seach for smooshi on youtube.

Hi everybody!

Thanks for the posts! Nice to know there are other walrus fans out there...

I also wondered where the walruses would be coming from, marinemammal. I hope they are new arrivals from outside the US.

Anyway, I read here that the exhibit opens in November 2007.

I don't think they have the walruses in yet. I think they just officially opened to polar bears and sea otters a couple weeks ago. I think the sea lions are coming next, then the walruses.

Here's an entertaining story about the new otters:
