Please upload images of a Rodinal nature—whether developed in combinations, home-made soups, or similar chemistry.

here are plenty of groups for your beautiful colour photographs. This is not one of them.

Topics and descriptions of concoctions, procedures, or even disasters are always welcome!

kenelast71 posted a reply:

Someone requested a Acufine Developer, this the closest one that I have come across. It is not my formula, I got it off the net, chemistry is not my strong suite any more. Too many problems.

The math can cause headaches.

Acufine Substitute # 1

Chemical Amount	Units
Water (125°F/52°C) 750	ml
Metol 1.5	g
Sodium sulfite (dessic) 53.2	g
Hydroquinone 4.5	g
Borax 2.5	g
Sodium Carbonate	2.25	g
Phenidone	0.25	g
Potassium Bromide	0.675	g
Cold water to make 1000	ml

Note: Above is a formula stated to be a substitute for Acufine. It was submitted by Paul Farber. It uses Metol in its composition, along with Phenidone and Hydroquinone making it a very potent film developer. A near copy of FX-4, except for the small use of Sodium Carbonate; and half of the Sodium Sulfite amounts.

Thank You

kenelast71 posted a reply:

As I was talking to my friend David, who is a semi-retired attorney. I ask him to look at the patent filed by Dr. M. Andresen, and this what he said.

Kenny, have you lost or closed your mind. No one is issued a patent in the same day that is filed. No one.

It appears that Dr. Andresen filed for his patent in those nations, and was waiting their approval. It does not mean the formula is not public domain, it mains that Dr. M. Andresen was issued a patent because no one else had patent the material in the US or maybe the world. Not that it was not public domain. If someone was to challenge the filing, it may not hold up in court, now that you can prove that the formula went public on September 8, 1891.

David stated, the patent issued in the US on June 21. 1892, when it was filed on October 12, 1891. The patent does not mention the filing dates in the other nations, it only state that a patent was granted. Since France and England were members of the International Copyright Treaty prior to July 1, 1891, there was no need for Dr. M. Andresen to travel to the US to file for patent.

Then David stated something that really got my attention.

It appears that Dr. M. Andresen made the formula, public domain. As stated in his first paragraph. Stating that anyone skilled in the art of chemistry can make and use the same.

Yet David went on to say, it is strange that a patent would be issued so close together; Jan 27, 1891, Germany, Jan 30, 1891, England, and Feb 7, 1891, France. Because it appears that no time was allowed for others to protest or challenge the patent; as shown in the United States filing of the patent, which took 8 months and 9 days between filing and the issuing of the patent. And if England and France had indeed granted a patent, they would have contacted the United States themselves. Since they are members of the same treaty.

David stated that he does not understand why the patent was issued, since it is protecting nothing. The mixing of the formula is no different than when mixing other developers such as hydroquinone with caustic soda. He state that it pretty much like the Bayer aspirin formula.

Well, I told David thanks and that I am done. I ran across the writings of an icon of mine, that led me down a road that is just as cloudy now, as it was back then. It is my believe that Dr. M. Andresen associates feared he would harm them, so they took the action that they best thought was required.

It was a good ride, but I do not smoke cigars, I do not smoke period. And thank those who rode it with me. Now lets go and shoot some film.

Thank You
