SpaceX's demonstration flight launch of its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule to the International Space Station for NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program now is being targeted for Monday, April 30, 2012 at 12:22 p.m. EDT.
Both NASA and SpaceX are working toward that date, pending official approval at the Flight Readiness Review meeting on April 16. The launch will take place at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex-40 in Florida.

Thanks so much for the info! We don't have a pass, so we're just going to wing it. I live on the west coast of FL and have been able to see the vapor trail for quite a few of the lift offs - plus hear the sonic boom when they return, but have never seen a lift off "up close". Thank you again!

fortsonre posted a reply:

If you don't have any sort of car pass to get on site at KSC, then I'd say you have a couple of options. First, you can go to Titusville and along the Indian River, you can get a view of the launch pads. You're about 12 miles away, so you'll get a delayed sound, but you can see it lift off (with a good telephoto lens). Even with the naked eye, you'll see the giant exhaust cloud and will (eventually) hear the rumble.

The other place is Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral, along the port entrance and the beach. You won't be able to see it lift off, but as soon as it rises above the horizon (just a few hundred feet off the ground) you'll see it. You're a little closer than in Titusville and you'll see it arc out over the ocean.

There is also the 528 Causeway between Merritt Island leading into Cape Canaveral. People will often park along there and from there, you should be able to see the pads. You're basically the same distance away as you would be at Jetty Park.

Please understand that there will be a HUGE crowd for this launch, so where ever you plan to view the launch from, plan to get there as much as 12 hours ahead of time. Bring some camping gear, snacks, etc and plan to wait it out. If you've never seen a launch live, it's a thrilling event, and plus you'll see one of the last manned American launches for the next several years. Good luck!

Hi all,
do any of you know of a good place to set up and take photos? It's a last minute decision for us to go over and try to get some photos of the launch. I'm not that familiar with the area so if anyone can give me some advice I'd really appreciate it!!!
Thanks so much!!!
