Photos of temples of ancient Egyptian civilisation from the Delta to Nubia. All of Egypt's surviving temples - ranging from the vast temple of Amun at Karnak, to small shrines like the Ptah's shrine near Deir el-Medina. Only on Egyptian and Sudanese territory.

No pyramids or tombs, please. Relief pictures welcome.

Hi, I'm Mary Hughes. I've been fascinated by the ancient Egyptian culture since my youth. Studied Egyptian art and briefly hieroglyphs in college. Many years ago went to the King Tut exhibit at the Met in NYC. Toured Egypt last month and visited several of the temples.

My favorite temples are the Temple of Seti at Abydos, and the Temple of Hathor in Dendera. The Temple of Seti contains some of the best preserved bas-relief carvings on the walls, and the seven shrines are dedicated to different deities. Furthermore, the Oseirion next to the Temple is a breathtaking sight and you can see the Flower of Life pattern carved on one of the blocks.

The Temple of Hathor contains beautiful carvings on the exterior walls of the temple complex and a beautifully painted roof in the Astronomical Ceiling. Also there are two special sections in the temple. There is a crypt down in the basement where you can find mysterious reliefs and images including the famed Dendera lights. On the rooftop there is a small room housing the Dendera zodiac on the ceiling that shows the different constellations.

These are my two favorite Temples for the diversity in carvings and artwork, and good preservation of them. Take a look at my galleries for some photos =).

that's something i've forgotten to say. the most exciting part of being in the temple of Isis -originally located on the island of Philae- was being aware of the fact that it was the point where the ancient Egypt fell down...

till the 6th century, people continued to pray in this temple, and it was the last place in which people worshiped to Amun and Horus... this is the most important thing about that temple.

Fatih, I agree with you that the temple of Isis (I assume you mean Philae) has a very feminine character. It was the last ancient Egyptian temple to be in use and even though it was moved from its original island it retains a special magic. The setting alone is so beautiful it always takes my breath away.
