We have a Podenco. It is a breed that thrives on exercise and I guess that it is genetically built that way, being bred for hunting. We walk it 5 times a day and I suppose that it gets between 10 and 15 kms or more each day. Somedays it gets to run to the gym with us too!
We are lucky in that we work from home but your dog will gain so much from being on walks, and so will you. I've met so many people when walking the dog. I am fitter and more relaxed, the dog is quiet at home and very content. She never barks whilst we are out and has no feelings of anxiety (as far as we can tell). She is incredibly healthy too!
You owe it to your dog to give it exercise, and lots of love, of course! Now... go walk your dog!

VALUE the rescue Greyhound needs your help!

DawnOne posted a new topic:

VALUE the Greyhound needs your help outrageous high vet bills poor owner debt disability assistance
www.flickr.com/photos/dawnone/4198253046/in/photostream/

"Value" is Brigitte Junga's greyhound, who caught her tail in a door on December 14, 2009 and had to go to the vet. Now there are further complications following the surgery. His owner is a sweet young girl on disability who loves and needs this dog. She doesn't have much money at best of times, and this is an impossible debt for her. Please read their story below.

If you can spare an extra $5. or so, please consider donating any amount, no matter how small, to help reduce her vet bills. Donations to the vet bill of 'Value" the greyhound (owner Brigitte Junga), can be made DIRECTLY TO THE VET - QUEEN WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL at 923 Queen St. Toronto Canada, in person or over the Phone, number is (416) 815-8387 and they accept credit cards (naturally, they're vets...)

Thank-you!
SO:

i forgot to tell on faceboof that Val is getting only 2 inches of tail removed. Some people thought it was the whole thing! So this makes me feel a bit lucky.

Val goes under tomorrow am. She's at Queen West (which is right near Capsule on queen). I decided that since i'm already spending a bagillion dollars, I might as well have her rotting teeth extracted. This made sense to me since it's stressful to anesthetize a greyhounds, and since it will actually cost less to do it all at once.

**********$1222.00***********

Merry Christmas to me. At least my doggy is okay. God Bless that her life isn't in danger!

And to pals who tried to help me find a good vet: I think I officially like the Queen West hospital. they discounted their prices for me since I'm on disability, and I called around to 4 other vets (the one near church and bloor, bathurst and dupont, parkdale and bluecross) and all of those places quoted me a higher price. The only way it would have been cheaper is if I went to bluecross initially (which wasn't an option) and even then, it would have only been a tiny bit cheaper.

So, fingers crossed for baby snickeroo tomorrow!

thanks guys
VALUE FIASCO update

Friday 18 December 2009 at 14:58
...so:

I went to get Val yesterday. I had my meeting with the vet about how to care for her, when to give meds, etc, then out comes Val to meet me in the waiting area. She whaps her tail against the wall or something, and blood spews everywhere! Over the reception desk, the chairs, the message board -everything! So they took her back to re bandage. After 15 minutes, Dr. Chong tells me she's split her stitches and broken a vein. I had to leave, and they had to put her under and do the surgery again.

It gets worse:

I got a call that evening, saying the surgery went well BUTTTT.... when they put her under, she had a sort of fit. Which is quite rare, but does sometimes happen. This caused her to thrash about uncontrollably, and she injured both of her legs. Bad enough that she now has 6 stitches on her legs!

It gets worse:

They are now quite concerned that Val has the doggy version of hemophilia. This clotting disorder is such a cause for concern that they recommended that Val's off-leash lifestyle come to an end forever (how could I do that????) so as to reduce her risk of harm.

It gets worse:

Today Meiron and I went to pick her up, and yes, once again, the geyser bursts!. This time they were able to wrap her up good enough that I finally got to take her home.

But now I've been told that the clotting disease test is something that is less than optional for her well being.

As you know, the costs for Val's care has been enough to cover the deposit on a small home in some places! It's out of control. So here's what I'm asking:

If everyone I know could donate _____$4.00_____ measly dollars to Val's cause, I would be able to cover the cost of Val's hemophilia test. Tis' the season, right? And there's no gift Val would like more.

her vet is QUEEN WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL at 923 Queen. that's directly across from Trinity Bellwoods park. The number is (416) 815-8387. Could you drop by, or call in (they accept credit card donations over the phone), and donate 4 dollars for VALUE?

I thank you more than you could know. I am sad. And exhausted.
(Message from Dawn One-
I personally think that vet bills are becoming out of control. If you are poor or under employed, this can be a deterrent to caring properly for your animal, or a financial disaster should a medical emergency affect your pet. Some say that if you can't afford a pet, you shouldn't have one. They say the same for children, though MOST people on this planet are born into impoverished circumstances. If money were the criteria, only rich people would be allowed to have pets, as vet care and the debt they incur is beyond the scope of most people I know. The lonely, poor and disabled often have more time and love to give to an animal, and emotionally benefit from their pets. Should they and their animals be denied this relationship because vets continually overcharge? Value's owner wasn't originally on disability when she first got her pet, but her circumstances have since changed. This can happen to any one of us. )
