The title says it all. Here you can post shots of your favourite mineral, rock and fossils. Please state the name and the place where the specimen was found and other interesting data that you know about it.
This group is not for landscapes or rockformations in nature. But only for collected specimen. There is another group for landscapes and rockformations.

Second guess for Magnatite or Hemaite.
A streak test would tell for sure. The streak of Hematite is Blood Red, while the streak of Magnatite is Black.
I wonder if it has any magnetic properties of it's own?

I do not know the geology of the area but I tend to agree with Mario that they could well be jasper. I would suggest a streak and a hardness test - no joke intended

Mariojazz- I have not seen anything that looks like pyrite in these- the tiny area of crystals in the larger one looks more quartz-ish. I'm glad you like the image- I wasn't sure about it & haven't tried to photograph rocks before- so Thank You!

Hi Bechy,
I do not think it is chert, I cannot see the tipical concoidal fracturation, I think it could be mor likely jasper. Hav you seen any pyrite or other sulfide little cristals in those samples??
Anyway good shots and very nice samples.
Thanks, Mario

Hello! I am new to the group & live in Humboldt, CA (very northern CA). We have a ton of rocks around here- at the beaches, rivers, etc.- & I started collecting once we moved here. I a, fascinated by the colors and textures in each rock & have only recently began identifying them. I am finding this somewhat difficult as I am native to Georgia so I don't recognize much of anything...

Becky Simmons posted a new topic:

I need some help trying to identify these rocks. I found them in Northern CA (just outside Carlotta, CA) at Swimmers Delight on the Van Duzen River. I have asked around but everyone seems to give me a different answer! Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer me!!

For the large rock:
-Soapstone (I don't think so b/c it has crystals & is pretty hard)
-Japser
-Chert (this seems to be the leader in opinions right now)
-Serpentine

For the smaller rock:
-Jasper
-Green Obsidian (I didn't think obsidian could be milky)
- Chert
