I use the 50mm f/1.4 (very similar to the 1.8) AND the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 on my D800. I absolutely love these lenses and think you'll have a good time with your 1.8. If you are able to get up nice and close, think about the Tokina as your next lens. This will open up a whole new variety of shots for you.
Here are a few samples. Happy shooting.

Thanks for your help and advice guys, i have decided to purchase a Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens with adaptor, it has been given great reviews and the price is fantastic for me, £100 with adaptor.

I think i also need to work on my technique and how to get the best out of my EPL-1

Hopefully i'll manage to get some sample photos up soon, once again thanks for helping ;-)

khoa_sus2 posted a reply:

I shoot concerts with an Olympus E-PL2. Usually for fun and practise, sometimes for money.

There is no Best Lens to Buy. A 17mm is not portrait length. On the micro four thirds system it's a standard moderate wide angle.

As far as the most-used lenses for me, they are the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 (portrait length), and the 20mm f/1.7 Panasonic.

I used to use a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI-S manual lens adapted to my camera. It is fantastic, but I've since replaced that with the 45 f/1.8.

A PEN isn't what most people think of as a concert camera, but it's very doable with care and experience.

That brings me to the most important point:

The only way to take good concert shots is to take a whole bunch of bad ones first, and figure out why they're bad :) Your gear is much less important than your skills, and even your kit lens can do really well if the conditions are right (ie: bright lighting system at bigger concerts).

Here's one quick tip:

The camera by default is set to evaluate the whole frame in metering the scene. So the dark parts of most concert shots will force the camera to overcompensate and boost the exposure, leading to slower shutter speeds (blur), and blown-out highlights. What you need to learn is how to compensate for this yourself: in this case, I'd have started with a -1EV exposure compensation and gone from there.

The other thing you can try is using manual exposure mode, and with the ADVANTAGE of an LCD live view, you can dial in your exposure as you go.

Good luck, and happy shooting.

Not familiar with your camera, but I use a 50mm f1.8 or a 85mm f1.8 on my Nikons. Works good in small dim clubs. And the 50mm is fairly cheap.

Thunderstruck73 posted a new topic:

Hi guys, i've just signed up and a total amateur so please be easy on me lol

I have a EPL1 with the standard 14-42mm lens, basically i want to start shooting live bands (just for fun) it would mainly be small pubs/clubs so i know low lighting is a problem

I have shot my friends band and it was pure hell flicking through the settings trying to stop blurring, or it was too dark (i don't want to use flash) i know a fast shutter speed and larger aperture is needed, but the fastest aperture on my lens is only f3.5 which is definitely not good enough.

What would be the best lens to buy? Or can anyone advise me on settings to get the best out of my current lens?

I have a very limited budget, and i have been told a f2.8mm would be fine but what mm length? 17mm is a portrait lens right? I want to get close to the individual band members but also get a great 'band Shot'

As you can see i am totally confused lol

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thankyou
