Dear TV-Tower-Group,

In October 2008, the German Architecture Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt will show an exhibition titled 7189Meter Politics and Architecture on the political meaning of TV-Towers.

The show will explore the constantly changing relation between politics, architecture and everyday culture. For this exhibition, we are looking for artefacts from artwork to souvenirs dealing with television towers.

Therefore, we kindly request the help of the international community of TV-Tower addicts: If you collect or produce objects dealing with TV-Towers from newspaper articles to toys, from photographies to paintings and art installations, from historical documents to personal design sketches -please send us an e-mail with an image or description of your objects.

Historically, I think there was an evolution from radio to tv towers, yes ;) if we are scientific we may perhaps say "radio and tv towers"

The history of the Television Tower of Berlin is directly connected with the historical situation of the division of Germany into two parts and the division of the city of Berlin. The former GDR saw the necessity to build a powerful transmitter in the middle of the eastern part of Berlin and in addition to this the Television Tower was meant to become an architectural and political symbol. It was in 1969 when SED leader Walter Ulbricht after long discussions decided not to build the Tower on the "Müggelbergen", a place in Berlin-Köpenick where the construction of a Tower had already begun, but on the Alerxanderplatz. In connection with the "Palast der Republik" a remarkable and representative monument was to be erected. It took only 53 month to build the "sozialistische Höhendominante" and on October 3, 1969 the Television Tower of Berlin was put into operation. After the reunion in 1990 the Tower did not loose its attraction. At the turn of the year 1995/96 the inside of the Television Tower was renovated and the technological standard was completely renewed. Now the visit of the television Tower of Berlin is even more pleasurable. Each year about 1.000000 people visit the Tower and enjoy the atmosphere and the great view from the top of it.
