Cancun Workshop

lvthunder posted a new topic:

Come and join us in Cancun Mexico for a 4 day glamour photography workshop. This is an all-inclusive photography workshop that includes modeling fees, mentors, lodging, food, and flight. You will learn to improve your glamour photography with our experienced mentors who will spend the time you need to grasp the concepts of glamour lighting. Each day we travel as a group to a different location. This will give you, as a photographer, an immense opportunity to get a variety of different looks. This glamour photography workshop is not for the faint of heart. We get up at the crack of dawn to catch the good light, continue to chase and change the light throughout the day and wrap things up each night when the group has dinner and an evening discussion. Be prepared to work hard, learn lots, and take some of the best pictures of your life.

What’s Included:
• Flight from the US to Cancun • Hotel
• Meals
• Workshop models & fees
• Hair and make-up artist for the entire workshop
• Transportation to and from the airport and shooting locations

What you will learn...
This is a 4 day workshop/boot camp on glamour style photography for the purpose of portfolio, editorial, fashion and advertising. You cannot find another hands-on photography event that will give you the same knowledge and cover the extreme areas, including EVERYTHING that this program includes for this price anywhere!!

Lighting:
We will cover all aspects of available light and how to make it work for you not against you! We start out each day by looking at the light at hand, talking about the light and searching for the best possible use of that light. We will discuss Jerome’s theory of “found light”, and use that light to the best of our abilities each and every day.
We will work with reflectors, scrims, and diffusers to teach different ways to manipulate and control outdoor lighting. We will work indoors with available lighting including window light, and flash/strobe lighting. Lighting...the most important element in photography will be talked about each and every day all day in every single location.
You will learn how to control your flash and/or strobe as a fill light and as a main light both indoors and outdoors. You will learn to work with multiple flash and/or strobe units to create and add depth to your images.
You will have the opportunity to work with directional lighting like front light, side light, and back light and learn how different lighting scenarios will enhance, highlight, and change the facial features and highlight selected body parts of each model.
Each and every location throughout the 4 day workshop will bring new and exciting challenges in the eyes of posing, lighting, and control...and you will have the opportunity to work with models in each and every setting, helping you to expand your knowledge and photographic abilities in the realm of your camera, lighting, and composition.

Models:
Learn how to work with and direct models of all types and modeling abilities.
We will discuss the influence of modeling different body types and directing your model into comfortable and photographic positions...to make the model look better!
You will learn the difference for photographing a model for editorial vs the models portfolio
We will discuss fashion photography, glamour photography, and editorial photography.
Photoshop:
Learn easy ways to speed up your workflow...
Different programs for downloading, numbering, and adding keywords to enhance your files and photo searches. We will cover several easy tips for skin softening, object removal, and general image editing to give you the best results!!

For legit fashion photography contests I would suggest joining PSA (Photographic Society of America). They have all kinds of contests. Well now that I think about it they are more competitions than contests, because I don't think you win prizes. You win ribbons and medals.

You're doing well for only shooting for two years. I really wouldn't consider these fashion images though. In a fashion image the subject is the clothes. In most of these pictures the clothes are being obscured by railings and grates.

As far as posing goes the 1st picture I don't care for the pose because of how the shirt is laying. It makes her look a lot wider than she really is. My favorite out of this set is the third one.

To learn lighting and posing it is best to attend a few workshops. I am part of one that I think would help you. The workshop I'm taling about takes place in Cancun. Here is a link to a few that i took at the workshop last year. www.flickr.com/photos/lvthunder/sets/72157630769696248/ We shoot some nudes but I don't like to post those. During this workshop the instructors teach you how to see the light out on location which is the best place to learn it since we can shoot one picture and then move the model and shoot another one. To learn more about the workshop goto www.cancunworkshop.com

Reply to Medium format or DSLR ?

Bruce (Bugra ERGIL) posted a reply:

even that this is a old topic by a person who's account is no longer available I could not help my self but to share my experience.

I shoot with both 35mm and medium format, both digital and film.
I use Mamiya RZ67 and Nikon D700.

I try to use the Mamiya in every shoot I do as long as I can take my time in studio or location, but I also use the D700 in every shoot as well because I don't have my own digitalback so my mamiya is mainly film.
I love the results I get from 6x7 camera. But mamiya being Manual focus Film medium format camera really slows me down.
If I can go with a PhaseOne 645 and Phase one digitalback, I'd give my D700 to a assistant to take behind the scenes photos.
I don't chimp and I tether the camera to IMAC in studio or MacBook pro in location so the Stylist, makeup artist, hairstylist, can look through the Photographs as i shoot.

Long story short If i had a New generation Medium format and a digital back I'd use that instead of 35mm DSLR but I'd keep shooting with MamiyaRZ67 because I love that camera and Shooting film.

This is taken with Mamiya RZ67 and kodak portra 160

and this one is with Nikon D700 + 70-200mm

DoF is different in Mamiya because of . . .
1. 6x7 format
2. in MamiyaRZ67 as you focus you need to open up the exposure a stop or half.
3. 160 Iso film has half a stop difference than 200Iso
So Mamiya was f 5.6 and D700 was F11

Kilgore 626 posted a reply:

I'm fortunate to own both a H4D and 1DS MKIII,

The H4D is out of this world for image quality, tone, DOF, and dynamic range but as has been mentioned above they are slow and clumsy cameras. There are a lot of times when I know to just leave it at home because a particular shoot will require the speed and flexibility that only my DSLR can manage.

That having been said any time I do shoot with it, it rewards in bucket loads, there is something about the colour handling and tone that I have not seen in any DSLR. For pure image quality there is currently no better than a digital MF.

It all comes down to what your shooting I guess as to which type of camera is most suitable for you and your daily needs, if your fortunate to be shooting in the high end world of advertising, commercial work or top fashion then a medium format is industry standard and this type of work demands the quality that only a MF camera can bring. These shooting environments are usually very controlled and pre-planned and suit the slower methodical and considered approach needed when using a digital MF.

However certainly for me and im guessing for most of us the flexibility and useability that DSLR gives us makes it the one to own if between the two you had to pick.
