Converted Digital Infrared Cameras

This group is for anyone who has had their digital camera converted for infrared photography either by themselves or by companies such as LifePixel. No limit on the number or type of photographs that can be posted (within reasonable limits) but they MUST have been taken with an internally modified digital camera.

The conversion process removes the hot mirror in digital cameras and replaces it with a custom made filter. The effects are dramatic. The advantage is that you do not have to use any kind of filter over the lens and the camera retains full functionality, with a sharpness you rarely see in infrared photos.

Here, for instance, is how LifePixel describes the process:

"Digital imaging sensors in most cases are just as sensitive to infrared light as to visible light. Camera manufacturers stop infrared light from contaminating the images by placing a hot mirror filter in front of the sensor which effectively blocks the infrared part of the spectrum while still allowing the visible light to pass.

We remove this hot mirror filter and replace it with a custom manufactured infrared filter. The infrared filter does the opposite of the original hot mirror filter, it blocks UV & visible light and allows infrared light to pass unaffected."

Other conversion operations may approach it in a somewhat different fashion and companies such as LifePixel also offer do-it-yourself materials for the technically proficient and adventurous.

Please share your stories as well as the post-processing techniques you use to create the final images.

The link to astra products is listed above. The dimensions of the d70s filter are approx. 29.5mm x 25.5mm x 1.2mm.

I used this material which I cut to size myself:

I had a 590nm put in my Nex5 and it seems to work well, hard to tell at the mo as it is winter here, so not much foliage around, nor contrasting blue sky. I need to make sure the WB is set correctly. I had it done in the UK and would not recomend who did it. Life pixel seem to be the best around I wish I had gone with them,

not sure if it will be usefull, but for the wavelength i have it is recomended to set WB using a grey card. The Sony RAW conversion software lets you select a WB using greys by using the dropper tool to select the correct grey, hopefully this combined with a grey card will produce the correct WB.

I just got my NEX-5 converted (665nm) and it's great. Its still winter here so I haven't had a real good chance to check how much colour separation you get from sky to plants but what I have seen has been good. Being a mirrorless you can throw any old manual lens on with an adapter which is a bonus. I picked mine up on ebay converted by a guy who uses the lifepixel filters.

For Sale D70 IR converted Camera for Sale - NOW SOLD

FrattonFreak posted a new topic:

Hi,

I have a Nikon D70 converted to IR with a 680nm IR filter.
This sale is for the camera body only (no lens) and battery and charger
£280 plus £10 postage (UK only). There are some images from this camera on my flickr stream. This was calibrated for a 18-55mm lens which I'm keeping but any lens inside this range will be fine. These lense are popular for IR as they are rarely hot spot

I'm selling this camera as I have now bought a D80 and had this converted to IR with a 665nm filter. I am doing a photography degree and wanted the bigger files RAW that a D80 produces.

Having attempted IR photography in the past with a screw on filter and being able to take images hand held and compose through the view finder is sooo much easier.

Its not for sale elsewhere yet but I guess it will be if I dont have any interest here. Do flickr mail me if you are interested
