This is one of my new favorite books (although it came out in 2003, i'm slow on the draw) and just had to share with the other like minded folks who would take a fancy to such subjects. I highly suggest it to anyone and everyone!

An oddly compelling, often hilarious forensic exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers--some willingly, some unwittingly--have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way. In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries--from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

i wish you infinite luck in the venture because in my humble experience i have not had much in that department...paid or otherwise. that industry generally tends to be closed off to 'outsiders' for obvious ethical reasons due to the sensitivity of privacy.

but please by no means take that as discouragement...i suppose it depends on the specific subject matters (ie the outside architecture, viewing rooms, merchandise - say for website promotion, OR the deceased themselves - say for the families to have) that you present an interest in.

i have a good friend who works at a funeral home who let me come visit one evening after hours to take photos, but i really had to beg & plead & promise to be respectful. he said there would have been no way for me to do it during business hours. here's some of the shots i got...
Funeral Homes?

I'm an amateur photographer who is looking to expand my portfolio and make a little money as well, and a friend suggested that I go around to some of the funeral homes nearby (I can name at least five off-hand) and ask if they need any photos taken. I would think most photographers might be hesitant about funeral homes, but I have really no qualms with such things and anyway, it all fascinates me quite a bit.

What I want to know is, has anyone else ever photographed a funeral home and if so, what do you think would be a good rate for it?

Reply to Partially Mummified Body Found in AZ Tub

apologies for the length, but wow - this shocked me enough to bring me out of hiding! about 2 weeks ago, a body was found in 8 pieces scattered along the highway in front of my parents' house, yet it's this story which really affects me. i'm sure a certain amount of desensitization contributes to my reaction [or, sadly, almost lack of] to the body dump. we just hear much more often about that kind of thing than we do a situation like this. whether that's due to an actual difference in frequency of occurance or a result of the news' tendency toward sensationalism, i couldn't say.

i do know that i was most affected by how long it had been since anyone saw this guy alive. i mean, i do love me some mummies, and am always a sucker for a good grisly discovery find story, but 7 years?! and i thought i was a hermit, actively avoiding people as i do... i know there are many people out there who really have no one, but it's very hard for me to believe the owners of this place never checked in, at the very least when the money stopped showing up. that does seems to be a prime motivator for some people.

ugh, this one has me shaking my head, a truly odd story. thank you for sharing it, it may just inspire me to work a little harder at getting treatment for my agoraphobia and social anxiety. i also want to thank you for starting and maintaining this group, i was so happy to find it & hope to get to putting up some of my own pics soon. :D

Partially Mummified Body Found in AZ Tub

_theblacklodge_ posted a new topic:

A partially mummified body was found in a bathtub filled with dirt in an apartment that was stacked to the ceiling with garbage and human waste.

Owners of the small, standalone unit thought it had been abandoned in August, when rent stopped being paid, Phoenix police Sgt. Joel Tranter said Monday.

Tranter said the owners didn't decide to do anything about the filthy apartment until last week, when they paid other tenants in the complex to clean it out.

He said the cleaners began by removing garbage and boxes and buckets filled with human waste.

When they made their way to the bathroom Friday, they found the bathtub filled with dirt and covered with plastic, a sheet and plywood. When they started shoveling the dirt out, they found the leg of a body and called police, Tranter said.

He described the body as part skeleton and partly mummified, and that it had been there at least several years.

"Very unusual, very bizarre," Tranter said. "This guy was literally buried in the bathtub."

Police removed the tub with the body still inside and took it to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office, which is conducting an autopsy.

Tranter said the body may be that of a man who rented the unit in 1995 and was last seen seven years ago. He said the property owners saw a man they didn't recognize at the unit four years ago and asked him who he was.

Tranter said the man identified himself as the original renter. The owners didn't push the issue and continued to receive rent checks.
That man has not been seen since August, and Tranter said police are looking for him.

A Certain Kind of Death

I was not able to find a trailer for this amazing documentary, but I highly suggest this to anyone even somewhat interested in the death industry. Go find it on netflix or any somewhat hip video shop...
____________________

Unblinking and unsettling, "A Certain Kind of Death" lays bare a mysterious process that goes on all around us: What happens to people who die with no next of kin? Filmmakers Blue Hadaegh and Grover Babcock present this dark milieu in surprisingly composed and beautiful scenes. We witness a variety of public employees handling the bodies, personal property and money of those who have died alone, each worker helping nudge the deceased into non-existence. As each life is revealed to us, each is also drawn inevitably toward the same vanishing point. Crews haul away property, crypt workers prepare bodies for disposal. Appliances, furniture and personal knickknacks of the dead end up in a county warehouse, where auctioneers disperse them to strangers who know nothing of the prior owners. Unexpected ironies and compelling imagery force us to ponder the question "What is death?" For the unmourned people we have come to know in the film, it is total erasure.
