Fading America

The US is fast becoming completely franchised and corporate. Mom and Pop stores, motels and restaurants are being replaced by the big chains. Before it is all gone, before it is all new, let's take photos of what is left of the good old days and post them here so we remember ! -- Bob

Since 1998, I've been living in West Central Iowa. I had just relocated from Michigan, and had accepted a job in a town about 35 miles away from my home. The job required daily travel to any of several other small towns in neighboring counties. These towns were all well past their economic prime. There were and still are many old structures—some abandoned, some re-purposed—ranging from residential homes to industrial buildings; along with barns, corn cribs, and other structures used in agriculture. Ten years and many photos later, I quit that job to pursue other interests.

One thing I learned during that time is if you see something you want to capture in a photo, don't procrastinate. Get the image as soon as you can, because even in economically depressed small towns, things do change. Buildings and signs get torn down, and are usually replaced with a new building. Sometimes they get repainted, or new siding is installed, changing the character of the building. Here today, gone tomorrow still applies.

Such great photo documentation of the deterioration an abandoned building endures.

Great mention of Bing Maps! I love using Bird's Eye View on Bing Maps when I have the time, to see if US Highway or state highway routes have a decent amount of older signage and buildings left. I always prefer to drive the original route of a road, if a bypass of the original road was built nearby, or a new 4 lane road alignment either paralleling or going a few miles away from where the original one ran was constructed. I also will use Google Earth program, to look up how many older buildings/signs/etc. remain on a street.

Of course, most of my finds are either places where I'm inspired to look it up when a pic is posted of it online(usually to Flickr), or things and places I see on my own while traveling.

I live in the post-industrial northeast US. The river valleys running north from where I live are a 3 dimensional book of the industrial history of the country. I don't have to hunt too hard, I just have to keep my eyes and mind open.

Take the back roads when you can, and keep your eyes open. In North Dakota we can get maps that show every road and every building in every county, showing which ones are occupied and which ones are not. The maps and very inexpensice and easily pay for themselves on the first outing.

I like to explore the dirt roads around my hometown. Even though I was raised here and have lived here off and on in my adult life, there are still back roads in a radius of 100 miles that I am just now discovering. There's some photos in my stream from Corinth, ND that I took a few weeks back. I never knew the place existed until I stumbled across it. I'd been within 10 miles many times over the years though.
