One of the standards of beauty for women in Japan - and throughout Asia really - is to have a small face. Nearly every woman I know here thinks her face is too big. The women generally impose the peace sign somewhere on one side of their faces as a way of reducing the apparent size of the face in the photo.

Dear all,

I'm going to visit Japan in about a month and as a big photography book lover I'd like to browse some used book stores that are either specialists in photography/art books, either have big sections for those kind of books. Mostly interested in Japanese photobooks as they come way to expensive here in UK.

So if you have any suggestions of the areas to keep in mind I'd love to hear from you. And it's not only Tokyo too! Any location suggestion in Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Okinawa island will be much appreciated!

it is a kind of an icon to express his/her feelings of happiness. in 1964, the female volleyball team got a gold medal in tokyo olympic. then the volleyball became very popular sports in japan. after that a manga "sain wa v" (means sing is v in japanese) which was featured the female volleyball was became a smash hit among teenager, and a movie and tv drama based on manga also became very popular too. the story that wins as a result of brave effort of girls. besides many tv talent and actress use v pose in tv show as well. through such a situation, v pose began to penetrate among japanese, especially for girl. i think v pose is put the meaning now that "i am very fine and happy". they want to express the feelings in the photograph.

If you are ever able to watch Japanese TV there is a story often told about an actor who went to the US in the 1960s. Apparently he saw one person over there do it and copied it. When he returned to Japan and did it on TV people copied him. I can`t remember the guy`s name, but if I ever see it again I`ll post it here. Hopefully you won`t have to wait too long ...hehe.

Any wedding photographers out there, what are some of the album companies?

Thank you so much, you have been most helpful. I owe you.

As for the prices of used Canon lenses you are right, I can buy a new one for the same price here. So I guess I will stick to other lenses and cameras despite the exchange rate.

Map Camera has some 65mm for Mamiya 7 at a fair price if in good condition. I will drop by for sure.

As for the other shops, I will do my best to visit them all and see what they have got. Since it will be all new to me, it does not matter if they are a bit out of the way: I will enjoy the trip and explore the surrounding areas.

Thanks again - I will drop you a line if I have more questions.

No Donuts For You posted a reply:

Hmm, I'm not sure too sure about compacts, but here are a couple of links I've found on the internet which should give you a ballpark figure on what to expect:

www.mapcamera.com/item/itemDetail/?mapCode=3000005542366&...
www.net-chuko.com/buy/detail.do?ac=2146960070504

Neither of these shops are particularly cheap, however,
Fujiya currently has a black titanium T2 with a data back for 25,200, and a couple of 60th Anniversary ones for 30,000 and 35,000. Everything is in used but good condition. Map Camera has many T2s and T3s, with the T3s going for a little over 40,000.

For the Mamiya lens you're looking at between 30,000 and 50,000 depending on condition. A shop named Saito Camera in Kanagawa has a great selection, but it's kinda out of the way.

www.saito-camera.com/list.php?2124839320
^ Look for 7用 for Mamiya 7 lenses. They carry Canon stuff too.The major shops mentioned above should have a few too, for similar or slightly more expensive prices.

For Leica you're really spoilt for choice, but I'm not sure I would buy from Japan unless you're after a Canon or other Japanese LTM branded lens. Both Lemon and Map Camera have a huge selection of Leica gear. You'll find many exotics at Lemon too.

A tiny (cosy?) little shop called Camera Box in Shinjuku occasionally has some good deals for LTM stuff. It's worth wandering in there if you have the time, since they sometimes get some rather unusual stuff. and prices are quite reasonable (be sure to check the condition carefully though, because they don't). It's just around the corner from Map Camera.

You'll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to modern Canon lenses on the used market, although I'm not sure if the prices would be that great compared to outside of Japan. Fujiya Camera has the 24-105 for 68,000 (low end of the scale for prices I think) and Map Camera has the 24-70 for 108,000 (a little on the high side perhaps).

Since I didn't mention it before, your best best for film is Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera, two of the huge electronics specialist chains. You can find one of the two at most of the major destinations like Shinjuku, Akihabara, Ikebukuro etc. (not in Ginza though). I usually get my film from the Yodobashi film shop in West Shinjuku.

Hope I've helped a little. The strong yen has made finding bargains much harder than it used to be. On the bright side most equipment here is in very good shape and rated quite conservatively.

If you have any more Qs just message me.

Thanks for all the useful info.

No Donuts: I am looking for high end analog compact cameras (Contax T2&3, Ricoh GR1 etc.), a 65mm lens for the Mamiya 7ii, possibly Hasselblad lenses, a 35mm lens for the Leica M6, and finally a 24.105 or 24-70 for my 5Dii (this must be a bargain, otherwise I'd rather buy it new here). I'll do some research on prices and see what is more convenient in Japan.

I've read the above mentioned blog article and it's full of great information.

If you have any specific equipment in mind, I can probably point you to a few good shops. Many of the cheaper shops specialise in a particular brand or type of camera, but they're also usually a little out of the way. If you're just looking for a wander around then Shinjuku and Ginza have the most tightly clustered used camera shops.
Those places aside I can highly recommend Fujiya Camera in Nakano. They have a good selection with fair prices and great staff.

Lemon in Ginza and Map Camera in Shinjuku are the largest stores.

Film is typically between 500 and 1000 yen a roll. That applies to both 120 and 135 (36ex).
