I looked at your link and found that the photos didn't seem to have enough action. I have done three years of photographing youth rugby in San Diego, for fun only, and find the 14-19 year old boys much more fun to photograph. There seems to be more action.

Matthew's got it bang on. You can't hand hold big telephoto primes. And a tripod is just too big and cumbersome. So that leaves the monopod as the only choice. And you don't need a head: just screw the monpod straight into the tripod collar.

Best to use a monopod for greater flexibility. If you don't mind the odd bit of paint coming off you can just as easily attach the monopod straight to the lens. I use the Canon 400mm f2.8 mk I and there is no scope for hand holding this lens at all.

Hi.. I was wondering how you guys were supporting your camera's and heavy lenses, at events. If any, is it a monopod, tripod or shoulder holster that you are using ? If monopod or tripod. What head are you using to get your best results ?

All of the advice above is excellent. One issue missing from the discussion is that techniques suggested depend on whether you are trying to capture player features, general play action or incidental event candids. Your objectives will significantly dictate your positioning and tactics. Hope this helps.

NukeHed posted a reply:

I played rugby for many years and I mostly photograph the team I played for. I think truly understanding the game helps, a little, in getting pictures. I find in some instances I am anticipating what is going to happen based on what's happening on the pitch.

If one of the teams is definitely stronger I will hang out near the goal line or behind the touch area.

Usually I roam the touch line. I shoot with a Canon 70-200 f2.8 L.

The other technique I use is to split the field in half lengthwise and if the players are in "my" half the field I WON'T shoot if they are more than 20-30 yards away. I know I miss some good photos from the other side of the field. However, I have found my keeper rate going up with each game.

The other reason I don't use the whole field is DOF issues. A 200mm @ f/5.6 focused at 60 meters, the typical width of the pitch, gives a DOF of 19.8 meters. We play other small clubs and the pitch is usually surrounded by houses, parked cars, industrial buildings, etc. Having 20 meters in focus tends to produce distracting backgrounds. The same 200mm @ f/5.6 focused @ 20 meters has a DOF of 2.13 meters.
