Studio Portraits (Critiques)

This group is dedicated to potraits created in a studio.

I started this group so those of us that like to shoot portraits can view and comment on each other's work.

I hope photos not related to the topic don't end up here. This a place strictly for portraits created in the studio. Because this group may contain photos of children and families please don't post nudes or implied nudes.

As a general rule please only post 2 or 3 shots a day. Post the shots you really want help with or you think are great and want to share. Please don't post just for the sake of blasting your pics out to many groups.

Please make use of the notes feature whenever possible, it's a great tool.

For example: www.flickr.com/photos/usadave/70650807/in/pool-studioport...

As a side note: Critiques don't always have to be negative. Great work deserves praise!

Hi, and thanks for the replies.
I usually take around 180-200 shots for the agreed 3 final prints.
Is this about right? How many do you show your client to choose from?

I don't worry about the number of frame I'm shooting. I leave that to Sears and JC Penny. I stop when I feel I have enough to work with. The other day I had a 30 minute session and shot over one hundred frames.

Hi
How many shots are people taking when doing a family portrait session, say 30 mins to an hour?
Cheers

love the first shot - dramatic lighting, different perspective. Need a better pose for the second shot - very bland. Like the 3rd shot although I'd like to see more of her eyes.

Agree with Nick. I use Alien Bees by Paul C. Buff (for all my studio light, modifiers, and stands). I would also recommend C stands. Those stands really are the best.
Shooting at a ball help

HeatherMcKinnonReed posted a new topic:

I've been asked to shoot couple photos at a Valentine's ball for a local jeweler. I have alien bees and softboxes but I don't have backdrops. Any suggestions? I don't know if I have the time to get backdrops. Do I need them or would it be appropriate to sit them in a plush chair together of some sort. Any suggestions on how to make it feel romantic without being in a studio and back drops?
