When I go to shoot BW, my mind changes and I begin to see everything in 'black and white' or in that perspective. This I feel is an important skill to practice. If you have ever loaded a roll of color film in the camera and thought you were shooting in BW (I have done this many times by mistake back in the day), when I got the film back I was puzzled as to why I choose to shoot the subjects in color as they 'didn't look right'.

Some people shoot in color and then decide in post if an image looks good in BW. This is a novice approach. While there are many subjects that look fine in either, there are many that do not.

When I shoot digital I shoot in RAW which retains all of the color information, my Nikon can be set to display the image as BW which is important for conceptualizing the shot. In post, I discard the color information during the post process.

How do you shoot your black and white? In colour and desaturate or do you shoot in black and white in camera? I tend to do the first.
