FAVOR THE BOLD

This is a group for photographers who live by the proverb fortes fortuna iuvat: Fortune Favors the Bold.

Our mission is to discovery and promote photographers who's work explores the new possibilities that exist at the uncharted edge of contemporary photography and who defy the expectations placed on us by the establishment forces of fine art/photojournalism et al.

Because this group is primarily concerned with emerging styles and techniques, digital is preferred over film, though raw talent and unique personal vision are valued above all else.

Selected photos from the group pool will be featured on our blog:

However, it would help if more people enabled sharing for tumblr. I believe you can set it up so only group members are able to use the share feature, in case you don't like the idea of just anyone reblogging your photos.

Great summation, akagoldfish. I find taking subtle, borderline boring pictures is a path not taken very much by photographers in general. (Unless, of course, you count the recent slew of fine art photographers like Bill Guy, Rachel Wolfe, Nate Mathews, Scott Connaroe, Jason Reblando, Mike Reinders and the like)

the pieces are here... posted a reply:

I can understand your confusion, which I think comes from taking the name of the group a bit too literally.

This group is about finding new approaches to photography. Bold doesn't refer to what went into making any given photograph but the style which that photograph exemplifies; the photographer's willingness to break with convention, and explore new possibilities. That could mean taking bold risks as a street photographer, or it could mean taking quiet pictures of empty alleyways: both are valid if done with thought and precision.

This group isn't focused on street photography per se, but more on deconstructing and reinventing photojournalism and social doc. Even then it's not limited to stuff that fits into those genres (since that would discourage exploration of styles not normally associated with those genres).

A lot of the members of this group do street photography, but that's more by chance than by design. It just happens that a lot of people who shoot street (yourself included) are taking bold, new approaches to their photography. Not every candid street photo belongs in this group, no matter how gutsy the photographer was in getting it (though guts certainly doesn't hurt).

In the case of the photo you linked, it's not particularly groundbreaking in and of itself, but if you view it in the context of Jancies's ongoing personal doc project it has greater weight when viewed as part of that series.

I hope that clears things up. This might not quite be the group you're looking for if you want super-selective street photography, but I hope you'll continue to participate never the less. Your personal style is very much in keeping with the type of photography this group was created to highlight.

I'm actually on the lookout for a street photog group with some selective content.

Hence, I must ask, what's bold about taking a photo of an empty street (for instance)?
