I recently came across this quote:

"A photograph is an instrument of love and revelation that must see beneath the surfaces and record the qualities of nature and humanity which live in all things." -- Ansel Adams

I like this quote in that it reminds me to look beyond the mere physical elements that a photograph captures. "Love and revelation," Adams tells us, are "beneath the surfaces" our photographs represent. How much love do my photos capture? What revelation do they cause me and the viewer to appreciate?

The 5 facets of photography

A while back I wrote some musings about five aspects or facets of photography. Initially I approached the topic as a phased approach to go from technical aspects of photography to explore and capture the essence of an image. Some pointed out that this time-phased mindset did not allow for continued growth in these 5 areas I describe, hence the resulting write-up. Check it out and see what you think.

Telling the right story

When I read Bryan Peterson's books (Understanding exposure & Learning to see creatively), I learned that my photos should tell a story, and all the camera settings, etc., should only come about to serve that story the photo is going to tell. Since then, I've struggled with the "what's the story question." In this blog entry I describe an experience where this struggle led to interesting results when I didn't settle for the obvious answer.
