Hello,

We bought a Nikon 400mm f2.8 AF-S II lens the other day and today has been a day that I went to the local nature reserves to have a good play and to see what it is like. I have a 1.7x TC too but I thought that the lighting wasn't very good so the slightly soft images have been excused due to the cloud cover.

Something has startled me though. The amount of chromatic aberration on this lens is huge! I have upgraded from a Sigma 180mm macro lens and a 1.4x TC for wildlife which gave almost no chromatic aberration which was astonishing!

I photographed a Coot which has a black and white head and intruding into the white was a red band that ran the length of the black feathers. Then in the reeds next to it, it had a very large amount of yellow/blue chromatic aberration.

This lens was second hand but seemed in good condition. Can anyone help??? Is this right??

i'm considering buying this lens or the nikon 500mm f/4G VRII. How do you find your lens in terms of IQ, handling and travel?
Have you used the 1 - 2.0EI/II/II on it and what results they produce on the 400? I'm a bit concerned the 400mm might not be long enough for wide life / birds and by using TCs to increase FL IQ will degrade in particular 1.7E and 2.0EIII. 2.8 is tempting though for sports & action but would be nice to use for wide life too... so hard to decide ;/
