The Green Globetrotter: "Exploring ESTC 2010"

Put on by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), this three day affair featured speakers, discussion panels, an exhibit hall, and networking events. It was an exhilarating opportunity to learn more about the current state of sustainable tourism and to see where this growing field is headed. Green travel being my passion, I was obviously also quite thrilled to be surrounded by individuals and organizations with pursuits akin to mine.
The fourth Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference (ESTC) is in Portland today and Friday and this year it drew about 340 delegates from over 20 countries. Put on by the International Ecotourism Society (TIES) — which is celebrating its 20th year —the conference this year focuses on practical ideas, according to Dr. Kelly S.
The ESTC 2010 conference concluded in Portland with the mantra of innovation and inspiration. Specifically, the morning sessions focused on innovation with participants having the option to attend a field session that emphasized green signature buildings or a voluntourism project at the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. For those participants who opted to attend panel discussions, novel concepts including the precise use of social media for ecotourism marketing, the rise in carbon offsetting awareness, and the engagement of communities and travelers to lead sustainable tourism efforts were discussed.
The ESTC 2010 conference continued in Portland with participants first being given a choice to attend either a field session on green signature buildings such as the Gold Level LEED certified Ecotrust Building or a voluntourism project through the Portland Parks and Recreation Community Gardening program. Those who could not join the field sessions attended a revealing workshop on the current state of the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC), which discussed both the progress and challenges in engaging tourism businesses to incorporate corporate social responsibility into their day-to-day business operations. Solutions ranging from consumer education to business owner training to transparency were offered.
Tourism industry leaders made Portland their stomping ground last week for an annual conference featuring the best of sustainable business and green living.

The Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference kicked off Portland-style Sept. 8 with the city’s signature mix of music, politics and green-leaning ideas. Opening ceremonies were ushered in by the Japanese drum ensemble Portland Taiko, followed by remarks from Congressman Earl Blumenauer and a panel talk with Oregon business and tribal leaders.
