Dear Dan,

When you open a photo in photoshop, it automatically becomes the Background layer This layer is uneditable because it is locked. You will notice a small lock icon on it.. There are methods to unlok it and it is required to do so sometimes. Just drag the lock down to trash can at the bottom and it will become Layer 0.

Suppose you were to open a second image in Photoshop. You have press v on the keyboard (Move Tool shortcut), press SHIFT) and just drag with the cursor. It is quite possible you will have to resize it. You have to press CTRL+T. A selection will form, then press SHIFT+ALT (not just ALT). Drag any of the corner handles. You will be able to resize proportionately.

I have Photoshop CS5 and have wanted to learn layers but have not tried it because it seems so intimidating. I basically use it for enhancing, color, light, sharpness, and noise levels. I wonder if you could give some instruction on what it is and why and how to use it?

Photography sometimes needs a little help from Photoshop. It does not matter what version of Photoshop you have. It is the knowledge of Photoshop that matters.

I provide free fully illustrated, step by step Photoshop tutorials for free, which can be done in most versions, though some are specific to CS4 and CS5.
