NASAJPL Comets & Asteroids Group

This group is for all those star-gazers and photographers who love elusive flying rocks – better known as comets and asteroids. At NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, our spacecraft get up close and personal with comets and asteroids so we can learn more about how they form and where they travel. But we think they're pretty cool to look at, too.

Post your comet and asteroid photos, and we'll keep you updated on the latest scientific discoveries coming from NASA and JPL spacecraft studying these complex space rocks.

Coming up on Nov. 4: EPOXI's flyby encounter with Comet Hartley 2! Stay tuned to JPL's Asteroid Watch page for more about EPOXI and other comet and asteroid news.

The pass of asteroid 2012 DA14 - photo

I had a fine night in the mountains (southern Alps) for watching 2012 DA14 asteroid. The show met the expectations. I observed easily the quickly moving asteroid using binoculars and took a series of 175 photos of it over a span of slightly less than 3 hours. I chose to take pictures of 15 to 30 seconds duration.

Here is an animation of a few pictures taken early on the night :

Asteroid (234750) Amymainzer. has not been observed up close from a space craft. In astronomy images from earth based telescopes it would appear as a point source just like all the other asteroids. It would have sky motion.

Here's where you can find a current sky-map showing the location of comet Hartley 2: media.skyandtelescope.com/documents/Hartley2-Oct30-Nov15.pdf
The comet is visible with a telescope or binoculars in the pre-dawn hours -- if you have dark sky conditions.
