Smena World - 2012 photography exhibition opens in Saint-Petersburg!

Kalina ** posted a new topic:

On March 23, 2013 Smena World-2012 photography exhibition opened in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. It’s a great pleasure and an honor for me to be one of the authors presented there!
www.flickr.com/photos/67259890@N03/8590246058/in/photostream

Smena World is an international photo contest existing since 2006. For those photographers who love film and take pictures with a legendary Russian camera Smena, it is a great opportunity to show their most creative works!

I have Smena 8-M model, and I can understand why it's so popular among lomo lovers – it’s not heavy, totally mechanical, very quiet and it works perfectly when it’s minus 20 Oc outside (I’m a winter lover and just cannot help taking fresh bright winter photos despite any weather!). I also love Smena for its unique “dreamy” lens and how it transforms perspective – there’s something magical in it! And it gives an opportunity to experiment with multiple exposure which I also like a lot. I shoot film for more than 10 years, but for me every film roll I unload from my Smena is a mystery till the moment I see the prints!

If you’re interested, you can visit the Smena World exhibition in Saint-Petersburg, Russia – it’s opened approximately till April 25, 2013, free of charge. Location: Culture center named after Gaz, pr. Stachek, 72. Let it bring you a lot of inspiration and positive emotions!

Giving film a shot :)

Emanuele Faja posted a new topic:

After explaining to lots of people why they should try shooting film I wrote a blog post about it the other day.

My reasons:

1) It's different
2) I take fewer photos
3) I get the film look :)
4) Black and white film is great!
5) I can be lazy!
6) (Mechanical) Film cameras are awesome!

Just wondering what reasons people here would give to others if you were trying to get them to give film a shot

Thanks, happy new year and happy shooting!

Why do I shoot film?

Because I still can!.

By shooting just the standard 200-400 iso negative stuff throughout the nineties, I felt I missed a big chance to shoot slide film. And since I don't know how much longer I still can, I wanted to shoot with it and tell my grandchildren about it.
I've since went on to shooting standard negative film, and digital mixed in as well.
Also, when getting my slides back and putting them on a lightbox, it's nice to see the slides, like a beautiful photo that needs no post processing.

Non-valid argument.
Teach yourself something new:

For B/W mix your own developer from crystal soda, ascorbic acid (vitamine C powder) and instant coffee.
You may mixc only what you need for one film, or enough for 10 films, your choice, and the results are astounding - if you know how to do it.

Developing your own film gives you a more intimate knowledge of your exposures and the whole process, sending out film for processing makes you but a family picturemaker all of your life.

"it depends how much pictures you make, if you develope one film per month than self development is too expensive."

Right on.

It amazes me that people only offer home processing as a solution when people talk about getting film processed at labs cheaply. There is nothing wrong with not processing your own film. Some people do. Some people don't. Some people do both depending on what the particular film is for. Labs are an important part of the film food chain. So are film shooters who prefer to use them over home development.

Good Question! I do have to admit that my printer, who I use, asked the same question- especially when I do have the access to good digital cameras. I think shooting film gives us that precious moment- we need to think twice and can't go back and delete..for me, its like Christmas when I get my negatives and hope for the best- especially with the medium format, where there is just 12 frames. Film is special. Film has soul and film shows more of the photographer and what they want to say in pictures. We know we can get that amazing perfect shot with the great digital cameras today, but with a analogue camera, there's that fragility and sensitivity, which digital image making can't replace.
Kind Regards; Elise

Why do you shoot film?

RobertoOrru posted a new topic:

I shoot film because, of course, quality is better: dynamic range is far better, especially on highlights, and if you are a line-per millimeter freak...well, maybe on (regular 35mm) film you can't have 2600 lines, you usually have 70-120, but you actually see them far more sharp than any digital sensor does, even $8,000 sensors. I use digital too for my work, but I am sick tired to see blurred details as if I had lost my glasses...
Most important, shooting film I'm aware that I project my work directly into future!
Yes, because I shoot film today, I process it (no way I give my films to any laboratory) and I digitalize the negatives using a dedicated scanner (not even a top of the line scanner), obtaining digital photos which are 60Mpxs large (yes, 60).
Ten years from now I can perfectly adquire some 1,000,0000 dpi scanner and digitalize the same negatives I shooted in the '80s with the new resolution, so I'll be always up to date with last digital technology.
With my 15Mpxs Canon Eos 50d, which is a respectable camera, I'm just stocked at the sensor actual resolution, no way to improve resolution there, I just should buy a new camera...
Think about it: we all know Fritz Lang's movie "Metropolis", a movie from '20s. Well, as it was shooted on film, it has been copied to Betamax, then to VHS, then to Video-cd, DVD and now it's available in Blue-ray...we still can watch it on a LCD HD television! Everybody has watched in youtube some old videos shooted in VHS, right? It's just me or they look really bad? So why we should think different about the future of our precious digital photos?
