I use reikan focal for mac and this tool do a perfect job. Adjust Nikkor 24-70/2.8, 85/1.4, 50/1.4 and 70-200/2.8VRI - all lenses in combination with D700 an D800. After adjusting the autofocus the results are absolutely great! Value for 85mm is +7.

Question. How did you test your AFMA, shoot and compare or program like Focal? I have 24-70 with D800, looking at getting 85/f1/4. I have Reikan FoCal for mac, as I find 10 days too short to evaluate. If I had to make large adjustment on a new lens, I be exchanging it, not getting it repair. The reason for my buying Reikan FoCal

I just switched to this lens from the 85D and instantly noticed it was not tracking anywhere near as good as the 85D, and is out of focus needing +20 in camera adjustment. All my other lenses are spot-on.

I had a chat with Nikon, and the technician "assumes that AF Tracking would improve after my lens is serviced, like all the others they have had to service".

snruffmonkey posted a reply:

My sample is spot on. If you're after a tracking lens with whip fast focus, this ain't it. Once you come to understand the lens and how to make it work for AND with you, however, you can capture pretty much anything. It just takes a little more 'ninja' than something like the 70-200 2.8.
The G is definately a world above the D in terms of performance but has a decidedly warmer render than the D (only my opinion). Not a bad thing, as I prefer the tone of my sample to my old D.

I got a horrendous trade on my mint 1.4D and still didn't hesitate in getting the 1.4G. I DO miss the build quality of the D but the G balances much better on camera and, most importantly for me, has focus override. Just grab the focus wheel and drive!

I don't think anyone buys this lens and expects it to take the photo for them. Learn how to manipulate its strong AND weak points and it'll make you smile every time you slap it on.
Good luck in your decision.

Is there a way to get it to 25?

My unit is +4 and is perfect.
And you?

Nikon won't change my lens and don't blame them? Their customer service is the worst ever. One faulty lens cost me $2,000 US dollars. If you don't want me to blame Nikon then who do you want me to blame? Myself? I guess I'm the stupid idiot consumer that gets stuck with a bad $2,000 lens. Go read the posts everywhere, the 85mm 1.4G is not a good lens. Just stick with the 85mm 1.4D.

Ca-nonian posted a reply:

I "had" this lens and all I had were problems. I "was" a loyal nikon user, until this lens made me sell all my gear.

I shot with D80 and then D90. I had in my camera bag 17-55mm 2.8, 70-200 2.8 vr1, 35mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.4G, and 85mm 1.4G. All the lenses were exceptional except the 85mm. I will explain below as to why.

As many of you who are reading this may know that the 85mm 1.4G was extremely difficult to get and you may have to pay over retail price. I purchased my copy and had front focus problems right out of the box. Instead of sending it back, I wanted it fixed by nikon so I sent it in. When I got it back, it still had front focus problems so I sent it back again! When I received it back for the 3rd time it had back focusing problems! I asked nikon to replace the lens and they denied me. I was out $2000 with a defective lens. I was frustrated & depressed and sold all of my nikon gear because I had lost faith in the company.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy this lens because it is slow and you will more than likely have front/back focus problems. Why do you think a lot of people are selling used ones on ebay etc....? It is not as good as people say it is. I would rather get the 85mm 1.4D or 85mm 1.8D instead. Good bye nikon forever....

I switch to canon and I could not be happier.
