Close Up and Macro Photography

Starting as a group of Sheffield photographers interested in close up & Macro photography, we now welcome all contributions from anywhere in the world.
We aim to be an active group, with a primary aim of sharing images, encouragement, tips and ideas as well as holding regular 'just for fun' competitions (they help to both motivate us and improve our abilities).

Put simply, macro is close-up photography. (Technically speaking the term should only be applied to photos which have a 1:1 or closer magnification.) In other words, it is the photography of subjects that are captured life-size or larger. Some also use macro lenses or close-up techniques to produce images as a form of artistic expression.

Photographing subjects (e.g. birds or animals) close-up, or capturing subjects that aren't strictly 1:1 are permitted in this group.

Look at the group pool to get an idea of what most members are attempting to capture.

This group will accept shots that make details that would normally go unrecognised become more obvious. Doesn't always have to be macro as such, and certainly doesn't mean we all need dedicated macro lenses or DSLRs to capture.

Compact cameras can capture very good close up detail nowadays. Telephoto zoom lenses can be used for subjects that may be some distance away.

Determination and persistence - together with luck - can often equal or beat those with more expensive equipment.

Some guidelines & suggestions:
You may post up to six images a day. Photos must be Close-up or Macro images, any images that are not considered such (and we're pretty laid back generally) will be removed from the pool. This is also a 'family orientated' group so content should be appropriate.

Ty and contribute more than just images into the pool. Many lovely images are posted here, if you see one you really like please leave a comment.

Any group member can take part in the voting to decide competitions, even if they did not enter it. Your participation is valued and encouraged

Please comment - using English if possible - so we can all benefit from the points being made. (Otherwise a link to Google Translate is here:
translate.google.com/ )

And finally, enjoy the challenges and the company.

SheffTim posted a reply:

One piece of kit I use on and off is a Raynox DCR-250 Macro lens that clips onto the front of lenses that take filters between 52mm to 67mm.

I bought this for use with a Canon SX20is bridge camera (now defunct) but have started using it again with a Nikon 50mm lens on a DSLR. It’s a useful addition to my bag (small & light when stored its plastic carry case box) that can be brought into use when required. Essentially it’s a thick magnifying lens that clips in front of a normal lens and costs around £45. (I bought from Amazon.)

Attaching the lens using the adapter operates on the same principle as attaching a lens cap; push in both spring-loaded 'prongs' at either side, push onto the camera's lens and release.

Using this lens takes a little practice to get the hang of how to get the best from it. (Instructions are minimal.)
On the SX20is it needs to be used on non-macro settings and focusing is achieved by zooming. I found the best way to fine tune focus was rocking gently forwards and backwards. (I imagine that on a DSLR, when using a zoom lens zooming also will act as a focusing mechanism.)

One issue with using the zoom to focus is it can result in pronounced vignetting (a dark circle appears around the edges, presumably it's the lens barrel showing), requiring careful copping to get rid of it.

On a 50mm lens I find the best way to use it is to switch lens & camera to manual (I also use aperture settings between f10 – f22); focusing is mainly achieved by moving the lens inwards and outwards towards the subject whilst using the focus ring; because of the shallow DoF fine tuning focus needs small rocking movements (millimetres) and steady hands once focus is achieved. Take lots of shots and hopefully you’ll have a keeper. Vignetting isn’t an issue on a prime lens.
