This group was formed in response to the calamitous 2010 Gulf Oil Spill, but the many threats to wildlife are worldwide.

We support birds, wildlife and especially entire ecosystems.
We pledge to not only share our love of nature but also be activists and vocal advocates for the conservation and protection of Earth's creatures who cannot speak for themselves.
We pledge to band together and make our Flickr community heard!

Please, NO images of oiled or dying animals in this group. There are plenty of places to see those images. Many of us who most love wildlife cannot bear to look at those images. It does not mean that we do not care.

Perhaps California should have chosen a bird found only in California, not just one with "California" in its name. Like the Yellow-billed Magpie, the Allen's Hummingbird, the Nuttall's woodpecker, the California Thrasher, Lawrence's Goldfinch or the Tri-colored Blackbird.

I keep my cats inside now though I didn't always. I have them trained to go out with me and stay inside the yard. They come back in with me on my request. The one downside for me as a gardener is that we don't get much of the fruit and veggies like we used to with the cats guarding the garden. Now the birds get most of it!
You might enjoy this video I recently took

I have to say that the methodology for the study was rather poor...a bunch of guesstimates based on assumptions. I really doubt the figures are that high. But like windmills, they are used to take the attention off the real cause of bird death: human encroachment on the natural environment.

A world with no birds?

lamoustique posted a new topic:

A young friend of mine wrote about not hearing any birds at all where she was staying in China. This is her blog about it:
bexadler.wordpress.com/2013/03/17/nature-its-for-the-birds/
What happened there is what happens when people with no scientific knowledge are allowed to make environmental decisions. It scares me that the Tea Party and the Koch brothers have so much power in Congress, because they are blocking the kind of action that would keep us from falling over an environmental cliff. Their focus on having big business make money is short-sighted...in a blighted world money will be meaningless. I don't think that environmental cliff is that far away, probably in the next few years.

Thank you for posting this, Michelle! I will put a sticky on it to keep it at the top of our list of topics. I became enamored of birds through photography, and in the early days (all of 4 years ago), I used a flash on a great horned owl at the top of the pine tree in my backyard. I was so excited it was there and didn't even think about it. I don't think I hurt it as it kept hooting away, but now I have a different ethos. I don't chase rare birds, and one of the reasons is because I don't want to see what unethical things people will do to see or photograph a rarity.

I've made the choice to be an ethical bird photographer, which means fewer killer shots and a less interesting photostream, but I'm okay with that.

A few years ago a rare gull landed on our shores. I never saw the bird, but I did see it through hundreds of photos posted online...including photos of the hordes of photographers surrounding it. It seemed small and vulnerable with all the people surrounding it, and I decided not to golook at it. Last winter I read stories from Quebec about photographers causing the death of snowy owls by baiting them and causing them to be careless around people. One contact of mine has complained about people waking owls up to get a nice "open eyes shot." Now I find out that this can cause a bird's death too! We need to respect nature if we call ourselves birders. How would you like to have someone wake you up, over and over again, from a deep sleep, to get a portrait of you? After a few months your health would suffer! Read the article below...and spread the word!
