I use ArtStudio on an iPad with retina display. I'm doing cartooning and I started out with Sketchbook Pro because that's what I use and love on my Mac but it is lagy on the iPad and switching tools is more cumbersome than in ArtStudio. The only advantage Sketchbook Pro has over ArtStudio for me is that you can import psd format into Sketchbook. (You can export psd in ArtStudio but can't import. so to import layers, you'd have to import each layer separately.) You can import transparent png into Art Studio, however, so I scan my sketches and use Gimp to lift the pencil onto a transparent background and import that into ArtStudio where I ink it and paint it.

Procreate is my favorite; no lag and great brushes custom. I am also trying SketchBook Pro but it is a little lagy (iPad Retina) ... Another fav for sketching; Paper 53.

Hello, I'm a newbie here. Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a retired banker and grandmother of 11. My main main hobby is Polyvore, where I make digital collages, and Pinterest where I have the end results of my experimentation.

I've had an iPad w/ retina for awhile but I just took the plunge and started experimenting. I mainly work with images that I manipulate. So far my fave apps are Percolator, Decim8 and PS Express. I also use Kaleidoscope and Art Rage. My designs are primarily for use as wallpaper.

Comments and suggestions are happily accepted in the spirit given.

jagr247 posted a reply:

Art Studio- Incredibly powerful art app with Photoshop like tools such as selection wand and 'magic lasso'

Sketch Club-A relatively new app with the best, largest and most incredible free brush collection..
What may appear as a children's app is by all means one of the best paint apps out there and if you are proud of your art there is a unique website to share your work, browse incredible work of others, get great tips from the other artists.

iDraw- outstanding for shapes and text creation. I use this app for creating logo mock ups.
Art Rage- Realistic Paint great tools
Inspire Pro- for real Artists I like to pretend I am every now and then.;-)
Procreate- still learning on this one but I agree with everyone else it's just really nice to use.

I am a self proclaimed 'App-aholic' so there are very few art apps I have not tried out yet.

A few long time creative favorites are:

Kooleido - I use this app to create backgrounds that I later Superimpose items into.
Magic Brushes- create full color brushes from images in your photo library.
TrippingFest 2 -Patterns , Mirrors, and All kinds of Colors.
Meritum Paint- 'Flo Paint now with non flo paint mode for real art creation and additional brushes are nice new addition.
Artisan Paint just love the flo and colors!

There is one other app that I simply would be lost without

SuperImpose
- just like the name applies superimposing item from a foreground into different background. A 'magic wand' masks out foreground selection and even allows saving in the app your masked figure before merging to lower layer
