littlemamaD posted a new topic:

Hi everyone!

I'm ready to cut into my AMH flannels and am wondering if it would be better to wash the fabric first?

This would be my first attempt at making a quilt with flannel, and I've heard it should be pre-washed first because it shrinks more than quilting cotton.

Your input would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
Swap some flannel?

imalisawork posted a new topic:

I am working on a folksy flannel quilt and I'm not loving how two of the prints I have are working with the overall design.

I'm hoping to swap for some others... here is what I have and what I am looking for:

The prints I have are unwashed 1 yard cuts. I am hoping to swap for 1 yard cuts but would divide mine and swap for 1/2 yard. No FQs though.

The lower left is diamond mine in sun (yellow) not grass (which is yellowish-green).

Thanks!

@Belle+Be & Cara ~ thanks for sharing your expericence. I think with a bigger seam allowance I'll be on the safe side...
And yep, you're right, I'm going to make a quilt...although pajamas sound sooo comfy :)

I wish I'd done a larger seam allowance on my FF quilt. I have a few area where threads pulled away during assembly and made it tricky to finish.

Belle+Bee posted a reply:

I've done quite a bit of sewing with AMH folksy flannels, and I've noticed that it only takes a few threads to fray away from the edge of the fabric before you've lost 1/8" simply because each thread is so thick. I'm assuming that you are planning to make a quilt with the large squares. I would think that if you're quilting 1/4" from each seam, then all your raw edges should be well encased, so it shouldn't matter as much. But if you're making pajamas or other things with exposed raw edges, then I would definitely recommend the larger seam allowance.

Hello there!
I'm going to sew the first time with flannels and have read that it's better to sew with a 1/2" seam allowance. My plan is to sew together just bigger squares...so nothing fancy.
I wonder whether this is still necessary with the great quality of the folksy flannels...
what did you do?
