Environmental Fashion Photography

OK, this group is about non-studio portraiture, whether it's outdoors or indoors. We're looking for high-quality commercial/editorial/couture fashion images with backgrounds that contribute mood, feeling, color and emotion to the portrait. The photos should not have been taken in a studio and the model should be the focus of the picture. Remember that there's a difference between a landscape with some people thrown in, and a portrait that uses the environment to enhance the emotional response.

All types of lighting and modifiers are welcome, as well as natural light only. Headshots are ok, but if the background is not visible or appears to have been taken in a studio environment, it will probably be removed. Although I love the genre, this group is not for candids, street portraits or street photography, so those types of images will be removed as well. It should be clear when the model is actually 'modeling' for the photographer. Regular sweeps of the pool will be made to keep the signal to noise ratio high, repeat offenders will be warned and Imperial Storm Troopers will be sent after those refusing to comply.

This group should be used to inspire and give ideas to other photographers who want to do similar types of shots (like me! :D)!

Let's see what you've come up with!

I always find myself looking for new and interesting places. Sometimes the most unexpected places are the best! So many factors have to do with your decision which can make it a bit more complicated . For example In this photo I was driving home when I saw a deserted lot with a tractor just sitting there and I knew right then and there that I had to shoot there!

I'm really just starting to look at this genre; and I'm delighted to have found this group.

I've mostly done studio work, but I'm getting a little bored with it now and, like you say, have started to do a second-take when I'm passing through places and accessing them as sets.

I hope to post a few pictures here soon.

Thanks for starting the group.

I find more and more, that as I'm out and about NOT shooting, I find myself looking at spots as potential shoot locations. I look at the light, the time of day, the textures, the colors, etc. I also like to see if a place is crowded or gets a lot of foot traffic or not (some models prefer less ooglers :D). Many times I'll have specific ideas in mind and I will scout out a location in advance to pick shooting spots. Sometimes I even take pics of the location to save for reference (I know, I'm a geek, what can I do?).

How to find good locations

Velocity of Sound posted a new topic:

Hi everyone, the group doesn't seem overly active discussion-wise but that's not a problem - go ahead and reply to this topic even if the last response was months or years ago!

You all know how it goes - for environmental portraiture, your background is almost as critical as your model or your lighting. The bigger your sensor and the larger your aperture, the more freedom and versatility you have by way of backgrounds. Yet even if you're shooting with the biggest and brightest, you don't totally ignore your background.

So let's share some tips. You don't need to reveal your spots, but how do you find your locations? What do you look for in a good shooting spot? Image examples are welcome, but don't go overboard...

As I don't do portraiture as often as I'd like, I consider myself to still be relatively new at it. I find my locations semi-randomly by exploring various places and occasionally try to pair them up with a concept. Within the locations I generally look for two things: colors, and sufficient distance to keep distracting elements out of the zone of focus. If no colors catch my attention, I'll also look for something that can trail out of focus, like a hallway, road, or fence.

Up until now, most of the shots I've been pleased with have been by luck and chance, and not because I was trying to control for them. Here's one of my favorites, although if I could go back and change my angle a bit, I would have:

Autumn colors were in the background, so it seemed like an obvious choice of framing.

But it's not always about what you can blur out; sometimes it's just about patterns and colors:

All right, let's hear it.

I've never done a large group shoot. Thought about it, just for the fun of it and the fact that you can arrange for access to a unique indoor location you might not be able to procure alone. I like 1 or 2 other photogs around for a shoot though. It's social and fun and you can bounce ideas off one another and help light. Not more than that though.

Still, I share locations if I'm not likely to revisit them (such as other places across the country). Or if it's a really public place. But the super hot spots? That'd be like sharing your favorite fishin' hole.
