Philly Murals

This group will pool images of murals created by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program during its 25+ year history.

Submitted images will be pulled into a feed on the official Mural Arts website. (New site with feed will launch in the Summer of 2010)

Why does Mural Arts need to create its own group, when several other unofficial, but robust groups already exist on flickr?

Basically, not all of the artwork in these groups was created by Mural Arts. Also, because we plan to pull a gallery feed onto muralarts.org, we want to be sure that anyone who submits to this group is comfortable with that.

Within Mural Arts, this group is administrated by photographer Steve Weinik:

Yesterday, Mural Arts dedicated what might be my favorite project of the year. It's a huge mural by James Burns on the side of the JEVS addiction treatment clinic near 4th and Berks.

I'm posting here to highlight the work of documentary photographer Mustafah Abdulaziz. He worked alongside the project from the beginning and created some incredible work along the way. Check it out on the mural arts site:

Hello Philly Murals group members,

The new Mural Arts website, flickr feed and all went live yesterday evening. You should be able to see it here:

muralarts.org/explore/flickr-gallery

The feed pulls 96 photos into 8 pages based on some algorithm that measures age/views and overall popularity. Keep posting your shots to help keep it fresh!

Reply to Why Are Some Images Denied Approval?

If you have photos of unsanctioned murals that don't make the "Philly Murals" cut, feel free to post them to the "Philadelphia Murals" group. As long as it's a mural and it's in Philadelphia, it's eligible there no matter how ugly the mural or how redundant the image. "Artistic" graffiti that blur the line between murals and graffiti are also welcome. I haven't decided what to do about those mobile murals otherwise known as recycling trucks, though...

I'm happy, though, that Flickr photographers' work will be recognized on the Mural Arts program website. I'm looking forward to joining and adding some of my images to the pool.

Why Are Some Images Denied Approval?

Mural Arts posted a new topic:

Hey all,

If you're submitting images for approval into the pool, you might be wondering why your images are denied. Here are a couple reasons that this might happen:

1. It's not a Mural Arts project. Believe it or not, a few murals in this town aren't Mural Arts commissioned. Notable examples are the William Penn mural on Chestnut at 23rd Street, and that 11th Street (near Walnut) mural by Meg Saligman. Since this is supposed to be an official Mural Arts Program group pool, I've got to deny those.

2. Redundancy. If I didn't deny most of them, 40% of the images would be of the same handful of murals. No commentary is intended, but I don't want people to have to see dozens of images of Frank Rizzo's face. I'll do my best to try and pick the most interesting and unique couple of images and let the rest pass.

Thanks all.
