First of all I'd like to thank Stella Blu for sending this link to me. It's full of all kinds of information about building materials used in Alberta. Some great reading, and some informative data about the history of brick in our province.

Thanks once again Stella!

Thanks for the great info. Perhaps you will have time to post a few photos on how the bricks are manufactured, what kind of bricks there are and some of the brick buildings of Madison Hat and surrounding area.

Malcom!

Wow! Sorry I'm a little tardy in replying to your topic, but it's chock full of goodness! I'll have to check Jack Mansons's book at the library. Looks like it might have some interesting data in there.

If you check out this discussion, you'll see that the melody censor has brought us some links to the I-XL plant, and it's history.

Thanks for info!

Malcolm Sissons posted a new topic:

I just discovered your flickr site. What a wonderful collection of buildings. Our city, Medicine Hat, just started an Historic Resources Committee with the intent of designating municipal historic resources and of course, many of them are red brick.

As a fourth generation Alberta brick manufacturer (I-XL), I am most interested in the topic and can provide technical information on bricks. A great resource for background on the manufacturers of red brick is Jack Manson's book, BRICKS IN ALBERTA. He documented many of the early brick manufacturers in the province. There is now only the Medicine Hat Brick and Tile plant operating in the province (est. 1886 and the oldest continuously operating industrial site in Alberta).

Cheers
What a bonus it is to have access to the links, and photos you have provided. I have many passions, and certainly the warmth of a brick building in the sun is one of them.

Thank you for your contributions, and I hope we`ll be seeing a lot of Medicine Hat brick posted here!

Red brick has been made in Medicine Hat and Redcliff since the mid / late 1800, and is still made here today (along with any other colour you could think of) by I-XL. HISTORY

I went on a tour of the I-XL brick plant a couple of years ago with work. The set can be seen here if anyone is interested

The city of Medicine Hat hold red brick in high regard and still prefers it to be used in development projects around the city as it has such a strong history with the city.

Red Brick

sahlgoode posted a new topic:

When Stella Blu told me about this group, I thought it was a natural. I've been using the tag "red brick" since I started flickring. There are a few groups out there that collect these beauties, but this one will be closer to the hearts of Albertan's.

I'd been doing some research on the history of brick in Edmonton, and when I get my poop in a group, this will be the prefect place to post the results. Yet, as we can see from the early submissions to the group, Edmonton, and Calgary are not the only places to find this wonderfully durable building material. Alberta is a huge province.

If I can find an anchor in a wheat field, there's got to be a brick building in Chipman we'd all love to see. Swan Hills? Fox Creek? Hanna?

Mansions, or fixer uppers, if they're brick in Alberta, I'd love to see them!

sahlgoode

P.S.: A little taste for those who are wondering. The Humberstone Brick & Coal Company was founded in 1881.
