Welcome to the National War Museum Scotland

This group is an opportunity for you to share your personal images of the museum – photos of your favourite objects and displays, the architecture of the museum, your friends and families enjoying their visit are all welcome. We’d love to see the museum through your eyes. Photography is allowed in the museum so long as the images taken are for personal, non-commerical use. Please check out our photography guidelines before posting your images to the group. Thank you.

War and military service have touched the lives of countless Scots, leaving their mark on Scotland's history, image and reputation abroad. Here, in the magnificent setting of Edinburgh Castle, visitors can explore over 400 years of the Scottish military experience and uncover stories of courage and determination, victory and defeat, heroics and heartbreak.

Visit us

Want to visit our collections in person? Come and see us at Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh EH1 2NG. Entry to the museum is free, but there is an admission to get into the Castle. Please visit the Edinburgh Castle website to find out more about their ticket prices. Please check our website for up to date opening times. See you there!

Beast photos?!!

Well, there is a stuffed dog in the museum, Bob, who was a regimental pet of the Scots Fusilier Guards from 1853 to 1860.

Of course, I really meant your best photos, but maybe some of you do have some animal photos connected with the museum?

Hello,

I am Eduardo M. Just been appointed moderator of this NMS Flickr group. I do love photography and always been interested in War, as an unavoidable part of History, which I do like to read about. My views about war have changed a lot during my life and it would really make an interesting topic for discussion some day :)

I am afraid the last time I coudl enjoy the National War Museum digital photography was just an idea, although I have been visiting it a few times after that without taking many pictures. I really hope to sort that out very soon :)

Nice meeting y'all :)

We've just launched our exciting new summer project 'What's In Your Bag?'

Whether it’s your handbag, the bag you take to work every day, or the carry-on luggage from your latest holiday, share photos of your bag and its contents and take part in discussions about travel and the significance of the things you carry around with you. We will be launching new discussions each month throughout the summer until the end of August.

You don't need to be at any of our museums or even in Scotland to take part, you can take part from anywhere in the world (although for anyone visiting one of our museums in person, there's a handy guide with suggestions of travel related exhibits to see).

For more information and to get involved visit What's In Your Bag - National Museums Scotland.

Come and show us what's in your bag and see what's in ours!

[ARCHIVE] Photography Exhibition - Helmand: Faces of Conflict

National Museums Scotland posted a new topic:

Dates: Fri 27 Feb 09 - Sun 31 Jan 2010
Venue: National War Museum, Edinburgh Castle
Cost: Entry free with admission to Edinburgh Castle

'Helmand: Faces of Conflict at the National War Museum, features the photography of Robert Wilson, war artist with Edinburgh's 52 Infantry Brigade. From the rocket pod on an Apache helicopter to an unfinished jigsaw at base camp, Wilson captures the lives of soldiers and civilians with an unflinching sense of intimacy.

The exhibition features a series of photographs taken from Robert Wilson's official book, Helmand. The photographs depict up-close portraits of soldiers fighting in the war in Afghanistan which has killed almost 1,000 coalition troops to date.

From the faces of weary men returning from three weeks on patrol to the dusty landscape of their surroundings, the photographs are both delicate and monumental in detail and heighten the sense of human vulnerability at the very heart of war.'
