lightenupandshoot

What is this? We are two gringo photographers that decided to move to Colombia, South America. Yes, we are not sane. We started this website with the goal of teaching photography with a little humor. We believe that humor has inspirational aspects and we plan to exploit them. We will take you on our professional photo shoots, as well as our personal projects. We will share almost every aspect of the shoots, the bad, the crappy and the disastrous. We will also show some of the good stuff along the way. So sit back, relax, enjoy and learn as we go into the unknown armed with our photo gear and our powerful Canon SD750 as our video camera!

Post your pics, ask questions, do whatever you want...all we ask is "lighten up and shoot"

For daytime shot like you are talking about I would use a b1600 with a Vagabond pack. High Speed Sync on a dedicated flash would work but it really cuts the power back.

There is always shooting in the shade.

The problem with a ND, CP or any other filter that cuts light is is cuts ALL light. It does not discriminate between natural and flash light. A graduated ND filter (depending on composition) may help but if your subjects head and shoulders are in the sky you are trying to cut then no filter will help, you need bigger or more lights.

This is where and why radio poppers and the ControlTL systems shine, but they aren't cheap. Being able to sync at 1/4,000 of a second helps the lack of power. However for the complete system you could buy a couple mods, studio strobes (like Alien Bees) and portable power. This will help with your ability to control your aperture in the way you choose as the high speed sync again lowers the power of the flash by emitting multiple fast pulses rather than one continuous fire. So again you need more lights to achieve say f/16 rather than shooting everything at f/2.8. But this forum is not about studio strobes so...

Sorry if this is somewhere on your blog but can't find it. I'm wondering if you have your setup for the guy levitating above what looks to be a balcony anywhere. Would be very interested in the setup and the composite in PS (if any)?

Reply to Question about flash zoom

Kevincurtin: the Zoom in the flash works different ways, if you are bouncing from the ceiling to get a fill in the room or to improve the ambient you need a wide beam, to highlight a person face or a part of the picture that you want to accentuate you need a tight beam, if you are using snoot or grids you need a tight beam because you will waste a lot of light if you use a wide beam since you want the ligth to concentrate on one spot, I'm sorry if my explanation is alittle confusing but you have great websites that you can learn from Lightenupandshoot.com", "Strobist", "Zack Arias", "David Tejada", "Joey L", hope this helps.....

You can zoom the flash head if you want a more concentrated beam of light, say to light a particular part of a subject. Also it can be used to get an extra stop or so when you dont have additional flash power.

I consider the zoom feature on speedlites to be the first modifier to get to grips with.

You can also use modifiers to shape light, snoots, grids etc.
Question about flash zoom

KevinCurtin posted a new topic:

Last week I bought my first strobes, 2 YN560's. I've been experimenting with the flashes and trying to learn as I go (I went through the vbook last week). Does anyone have any insight into using a flash's zoom feature?

From what I picked up, the wider the zoom the more dispersed and spread out the light is and as you zoom in to longer lengths, the light becomes more concentrated. Which situations call for which zoom focal lengths and are there any other ways this wil impact shots?

edit: found this article strobist.blogspot.com/2008/02/reader-question-what-zoom-s... . Some useful info
