Fuji HS10
Raynox DCR-250

Use the inbuilt flash and a cheap flash diffuser, which is just an oblong piece of cloth on some frame with a hole for the lens to poke through.

Not happy yet with the diffuser, it's still too point like and from the front, will probably change that soon.

Here is what I did.
Canon 400d 18 to 55mm stock lens NONE IS.
Reverse ring.

35 watt halogen buld 6 feet above (white reflection on the top) and a 1.5 watt torch so I could see to focus (the yellow light on the face).
Needle pushed into a match box to hold it up and camera lay on the kichen worktop (couldn't be bothered to get the tripod out).
About f11 15 second exposer because if the lack of lightt.
Did wave the little tourch about a bit whilst waiting for the camera.

That is a piece of fine cotton and NOT wool, the needle width was about 1.5mm

Heya,

I've been down a similar path to you. What I find works for me is to reverse mount a 50mm f1.8 to a 55-200mm kit lens (nikon) and use a remote triggered flash to light the subject.
The flash means you can shoot at highish speeds (upto 1/200 for my D40x) and then have the whole set up hand held for flexibilty.

Once you have the shots, you will need to do some post processing. I use NFRAW and GIMP. Basically all I do is bump the curve till it looks reasonable and a little bit of sharpening.

Hope this helps.

I shoot with a D40X and for really small stuff I use a 55-200mm kit lens with 50mm f1.8 reverse mounted to the front of it, and two remote triggered flashs to provide light.

I've tried using macro filters and they just don't have that sharpness.
I sometimes use a Tamron 70-300mm, but it is pretty low on anything good.

With my OM1, I have a 135mm f2.8 Hanimex Macro lens, but it isn't extremely sharp, tho it is nice to use.

This is the technique that I use, IE: reversing either a 58mm or 28mm lens onto extension tubes, It works very well once you get used the narrow Depth of Focus.

cyberastrofolkie posted a reply:

I started experimenting with another technique involving a single reversed wide angle lens mounted to the camera. It is now Winter here in the northeastern US and there are no insects to image. I tried imaging a section of a US Quarter Dollar Commemorative State coin, this one for the state of Idaho. The reverse side has a Peregrine Falcon. I first tried imaging the face with a CPC 28mm f2.8 lens reverse mounted with a Nikon BR-2 ring and two 36mm extension tubes plus my Fotodiox adapter from Nikon mount to Canon mount and attached to my Canon 350D body. This assembly was mounted on the tripod and the coin was illuminated by two 60 watt bare tungsten bulbs. I moved the coin back and forth to focus the image and it was shot at f11. This is the result.

I tried a higher magnification shot by adding all seven of my extension tubes, totaling 160.5mm, behind the same reversed lens. This image was illuminated by a single 60 watt bulb and was also imaged at f11. I believe the shutter speed was 1sec. and it was imaged on the self-timer to minimize shake. This is the result.

Here is a view, for reference, of the coin at less than 1:1, imaged with the same lighting, and on the tripod, but with a Tamron Adaptall-2 SP90 f2.5 macro lens and Nikon PK-3 extension tube (normal mounting).

I plan to practice this technique through this winter so as to have another technique to try next spring when the insects are available.
