Although this group has not been active recently, I certainly think this is the occasion to post something. Lun Lun had her third cub at ZooAtlanta in the early hours of this morning! YAYYYY! Here is a link to more details from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Today is Bubu's birthday. They're having a virtual party between 1:00 and 3:00 Ecuador time. Cute birthday cake that you sent him!

Ecuador time is one hour behind EDT. So, it's 9:01 am here, 8:01 Bubu time.

About Bubu

I´m an Andean bear, also known as a spectacled bear. My mother was killed when I was a small cub and I was kept in a very unsuitable place until I was rescued. Then I went to a zoo, to a cage that was not really big enough, but looked after well by kind people who knew that I need to move on and learn how to live in the wild, ready to be released when I am bigger. Now I am in a nice cage, bigger, with trees, but this is only temporary. The Andean Bear Foundation are raising funds to put a roof on the rehabilitation cage that I will go to to learn how to be a wild bear.

It appears that spring has arrived all of a sudden. Last week we had perfect panda weather, in the 50's with clouds and drizzle. They all enjoyed being outside as much as possible. This week, however, the weather has become much more Georgia-like, with temperatures reaching into the low 80's. When the mercury rises much over 75 degrees, we are forced to bring the pandas inside where they can enjoy the miracle of central air. The panda building is equipped with three industrial sized air conditioners that keep the building at a constant 55 degrees. We will generally put all of the pandas outside to enjoy the nice cool mornings, but bring them in around lunchtime when the temperature rises too much. Because of their thick coats, pandas can overheat quickly in very hot temperatures. You can almost see them instantly relax when they are let inside and are completely content to polish off the rest of the day surrounded by visitors, fresh bamboo and nice, crisp, cool air.

As spring slowly arrives in Atlanta this year, I am eagerly anticipating it, for the pandas. Spring not only means breeding season for our adults, which brings all sorts of excitement for us keepers, it also means bamboo shoots! Bamboo shoots! The pandas’ favorite food! I’m sure many of you who have kept up with our updates over the years know how crazy the pandas are about shoots. Some days during shoot season they will not eat their bamboo because all they want to eat is shoots. That can be frustrating, but overall, I love shoot season because shoots make the pandas so happy. Unfortunately, here in Georgia, we only have a limited supply of bamboo shoots per year. However, at the Chengdu Research Base where Mei Lan is now living, the pandas get pounds and pounds of shoots every day during shoot season. I am delighted for Mei Lan this year to be able to eat so many bamboo shoots. So, for several reasons, I am excitedly awaiting the new growth of bamboo this year.
