Traditional Skyscrapers

Welcome!

This is a pool for all kinds of traditional highrises / skyscrapers and their historical roots as seen in many religious or other high buildings around the globe.

The concept of the modern skyscraper is usually associated with the West. Those get their fair share here. But this group is also focused on alternative approaches to skyscrapers and its predecessors found in other cultures.

Group coverage:

- 19th/20th century skyscrapers in traditional / classical styles;
- pagodas;
- gopurams;
- minarets;
- cathedrals;
- certain stupas;
- certain bell-towers;
- certain defense-towers;
- other traditional highrise architecture.

What kind of pictures are preferable:

- with the architecture of the building well-represented;
- with few non-related objects or none at all;
- pictures that signify the building as a highrise / don't belittle it as such;
- also, not only highrises are preferable - it could be a low-rise building with the type of structure that could be used in a high-rise;
- collections / ensembles of traditional highrises are allowed, as well as detail photos;
- interior images of highrise structures;
- historical images / postcards / views of highrises are welcome as well.

American and Soviet Skyscrapers

AlexeiK posted a new topic:

Me and my Mom have been talking about Art Deco and Stalinist Skyscrapers and came to conclusion that Soviet skyscrapers were designed to impress while approaching them and looking at them from afar, while American skyscrapers were designed to impress while looking at them from other skyscrapers (otherwise you can't really make up the decorations). What do you guys think about it?

Reply to Favourites in Traditional Skyscraper Architecture

AlexeiK posted a reply:

Art Deco is an extremely interesting style - it was very receptive to Native American and African motifs - being spiritually close to non-European art in the first place. In Europe, abstraction thrived only in the East (icon-painting) but for Western Europe it took a while to develop a mature taste for abstraction. For non-European folks abstraction comes naturally - Art Deco was a major style developed by Europeans.

To tell you the truth, both Art Deco and Persian styles feel so sacred to me that I intentionally avoid researching it beyond a certain point - when too much information would ruin this perception - I prefer to feel these styles, rather than doing the same research and organization I'm doing on Russian architecture ( www.skypalace.org/europe/slavic/east_slavic/russia.shtml ). Which is also sacred but in a different way.
