The View from Airstrip One

Inspired by dystopian books and films like "1984" and "V for Vendetta", The View from Airstrip One aims to show the state of the UK today. Anything that you think shows the state of the nation after the combined ravages of Thatcherite capitalism, Blair's empty-headed New Labour; Brown's fascist NuLab dictatorship; and now the Cameron/Clegg "Big Society".

Please, we want your pictures of:

- Industrial decay
- Urban waste
- Surveillance and security
- Over-zealous policing
- Intrusive advertising
- Illiterate signs and posters, abused apostrophes
- Google street-view cars
- Protests and demonstrations
- Minority groups victimised by the police and government
- Counter-terrorism measures
- Anything suggesting the erosion of civil liberties

And anything else that you think is generally indicative of the state of the nation today!

All media is welcome: photography, illustrations and video. It would be cool if you could also geo-tag your pictures.

*** PLEASE READ THE GROUP DESCRIPTION BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR PICTURES. THESE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PICTURES FROM THE UK, HENCE THE NAME "AIRSTRIP ONE". ***

D for Derivative posted a new topic:

Hi all

I don't really enjoy coming across like Big Brother, but I've had to remove pictures and in one instance ban a person from this group for posting irrelevant pictures. I'm not happy about this at all. It goes against the spirit of why the group was invented, and has more in common with the principles that the group stands against.

I'd be really grateful if you could stick to the stated aims of the group, and think about pics before you post them. But if you don't, I'll just take your pics out of the group and ban you as a user. It takes me literally half a dozen clicks with the mouse, so it's no problem at all. You decide.

Thanks

Darren

Sorry chaps, was a bit slow picking up on this. I have removed the pictures in question (at least the ones I have found) and banned one member in particular.

I don't really like taking these measures as that sort of goes against the spirit of the group, and is in fact more in line with the things in the group description that we don't like. But there you go - if people aren't respecting what the group is for, then they'll be banned so that the spirit of the group is maintained.

yes, you are absolutely right but the group's Big Brother and Party Members are on holiday in some exotic locations and have lost the sight of the airstrip. Maybe, it's them posting the greetings postcards?

Much parodied in this group and elsewhere on Flickr, with much justification, is the anti-terrorist hotline. The Guardian today has an interesting piece that talks about not only how damaging and divisive it is, but also how spectacularly ineffective and inefficient it is, despite the massive amounts spent on it.
